Won't connect to servers since 1.5

Installed the 1.5 patch today having not played BF2 since last year.

The patch installed fine, but when I first ran the game it worked ok for like a minute then crashed giving me a punkbuster error. So I tried to manually update that (going to their site, download the files they mentioned) but then every time I tried to connect to a game server it would take maybe 10 seconds and then just respond with "You have failed to connect. Please check your network connections"

So I deleted the extra PB files i'd added (there where no updates, just the 2 htm files) and it connected, but would CTD every time once I played.

So I downloaded pbsetup and had that update it's BF2 stuff. But now, literally every server I try to connect to gives me that error, so I basically can't play the game.

I've searched and tried other forums but couldn't see anything like this. I'm sure it's an issue with punkbuster, but can't figure it out. A lot of responses i've read online seem to say just do a full reinstall, but I don't think I can be bothered to do all that just for BF2.

Any help would be great, cheers.

Update: turned off my anti-virus and windows firewall and it connected.

However the game will now play for 7-8 mins or so and then kick me out. Last time I got a punkbuster error message saying it kicked me for "losing key packets"

Anyone got any tips?

losing key packets could be that some other program or hardware firewall is blocking packets.

You may also redo the PB update to make sure its up to date. Thats what I would try first.

Thanks for the reply. It was the firewall. In my last attempt before giving up I tried turning off my anti-virus and firewall and it instantely worked.

Unfortunately now i'm getting CTD's after playing for an hour or so, and my CPU temperature is reading very hot. I had this problem years back so bought a far better CPU fan and a case fan, which solved the issue. But it seems 1.5 has changed something in the game which is making it run harder. Gonna give BF2142 a go, as that always seemed more efficiently written to me, but otherwise think my only option for BF2 is to open the PC case when playing and blow a desk fan on it

What temperature is your CPU running at. Anything over 70c load is baaaaaaaaaaaaaad.

Oh, and BF2 doesn't load your CPU, not by a long, long way. Something like LinX or Prime95 does!

When it CTD yesterday I stuck speed fan on and it said 58c, which aint 70, but aint that great either. Gonna try and clean some dust off and see if that helps.

Try running Prime95 or LinX, make sure your CPU is stable.
