Depends on your location / ping rate, but lots of people still do play. As for being a "noob", don't worry. I've been playing for several years and I STILL suck!

Well there are plenty of games open but I was more looking for some people to squad up with.

join a server and make a squad. invite other players. If any of them show good teamwork, invite them to your friends list. I got around 250 people in my friends list that way.

I can never completely get tired of BF2142. Every few months I find myself drifting back to it to spend a good number of hours playing for a few weeks. Unfortunately, it always seems that a session of BF2142 takes more time than TF2 or L4D might, thus preventing me from playing more often while in college.
