Battlefields Frostbite Engine ported to DX11

Here is some news that we all have been waiting for. The crew over at DICE has been hard at work on the Frostbite Engine. This is the engine that is used in the Battlefield games. The current version supports up to DX10 and can be run on the XboX 360, PC, and PS3. The new version will have support for DX10.1 and DX11.

The main feature they are interested in is the highly parallel workings of the engine. It is capable of running two to eight threads. This is perfect for the i7 and represents a real multi-core advancement over past games.

The actual port of the game was not that difficult as it reportedly only took three hours to complete. You can now add Battlefield to the list of coming DX11 games. This shows a much faster adoption than DX10 did when it was at the same place. Of course there are not as many differences between DX10 and 11 as there were between DX9 and 10.
In all it makes the outlook for DX11 games and hardware for the coming year.

hopefully bc2 will use dx11 but it only took them 3 hours to port it to dx11? lol

Dx11 will be used for BF3 on the Frostbite 2.0 engine. I'm wondering if Dx11 is only for PC, right?

I hope it's for console as well.

Consoles are only capable of DX9 since they're 2005/2006 hardware, so yes it is PC exclusive.

Really? I hate PCs. Everyone should have a console. Everyone.

The article actually says that the engine has been made to run on DX 10 and 11 as well not that it only runs on DX 10 and 11. This could mean that it could run on consoles as well.

Also nowhere is BF3 mentioned as being a PC exclusive or that this article has anything to do with BF3 or even that the FROSTBITE engine is being used for BF3. They may decide to use a whole new engine. Until DICE or EA say otherwise I wouldn't be surprised if they did make it for consoles as well. Stating things like "Yes it is a PC exclusive" when none of us actually know, is a bit misleading.

@MotorBreath I'm not sure what that picture means? You could have made it yourself for all I know. Some quotes from DICE would be nice :)

Anyway, that pic (If it is true) says that the FROSTBITE 2 is going to be on PS3 and XBOX. So if DICE were developing BF3 on the Frostbite 2 engine then it would be on consoles as well. There is no mention of PC on FROSTBITE 2. Does this mean BF3 is a console exclusive? :P

                      So much for that prophesy.

Cheers man. It makes more sense now anyway. But there's still no mention of BF3 or if BF3 will use the FROSTBITE 2 engine. It may use 2.5 or 3 or even a new engine alltogether. There is no release date for BF3 (as far as I'm aware) and so if it comes out in 2 - 3 years time the FROSTBITE engine itself will probably look pretty old compared to newer games that will be coming out then.

Personally I think DICE will use a new engine for BF3 as I'm sure they will want it to be something special rather than a game made on an old engine.

I actually think you're wrong. The Frostbite engine is very young, 1 to 2 years maybe. DICE will keep upgrading the FB engine all the time. If you look at teh slides on the link, it says "Current and Future". Also graphics will not be changing all the much in the next years. Ofcourse there will be some small changes with Dx11 coming, but it won't change the game. Crysis changed the game back then and Crytek said themselves that graphics will not change dramatically.

Also DICE has said themselves that the BF engine will be used for future BF games. So expect DICE to be using the engine for quite some time.
