Hi guys,

I play on an irregular basis, but I am playing BF2142 since it came out.
One thing that I never really mastered is these damned mouse settings for infantry combat.
My mouse supports varying settings from 200 to 1200 dpi. Friends keep telling me to use a setting of 400 dpi to be quicker at targeting hostiles. Some even use a higher setting. I found that I always oversteer with high dpi settings and have to adjust my aim.
But when paying with 200 dpi my targeting is good, but it seems to take ages until I have turned my sights to a target that is to my left or right.
What settings do you pros use when running around as a ground pounder?

I use a mix of two and change DPI on the fly. I can only really comment from playing BF2, but I guess the mechanics are no different to 2142.

I normally have it set to 2000dpi and when targeting, quickly switch the 400dpi for extra stability. I do this using the on the fly buttons on the mouse. Also, I use a 1000hz polling rate.

Stick to one sensitivity and don't change (although using it the way Alex does is fine, if you can do it quick enough). It should be a good compromise between looking around you easily and still being able to fine tune your aim on smaller targets. Other than that it's a lot of practice.

If you think 400 is too low try 600 or 800 dpi. I snipe, so I use 1001 dpi and 1764dpi and I feel comfortable about it. ( the wierd numbers is because I use the steelseries ikari laser)

The most important is that you find a setting that is good for you. Experiment defferent settings and try them out in singleplayer, then go to multiplayer.

Whilst running about, I keep my firing finger on the DPI down button. As soon as I see someone I hit it, go from 2000dpi to 400dpi and then fire. Probably as bad as macros!

I use 1001 dpi while running in a more open area and shift to 1764 in close quaters..

Whilst running about, I keep my firing finger on the DPI down button. As soon as I see someone I hit it, go from 2000dpi to 400dpi and then fire. Probably as bad as macros!

i change dpi settings only when i enter vehicles, or as lag factors in. i've got a g5 & use 5 custom settings. i crank it all the way up to 2,000 for rorches. tanks, apc's, fav's & walkers, i use 1,400. when playing as infantry i use 550. as servers seem to lag, i crank it up to 600 or 650 as needed.

i can't run around w/ 2,000 like you. i'd go in circles & run into walls, lol.

each player has a different setting. find a few you like and keep them..

Myself i had ones preset for when i was playing.. used them for when i was getting into Tanks/APCs and so forth.

i only raise the DPI on the fly when i either fly gunship or man the rorsch rail gun.

also, depending on your screen resolution (especially if it's not set on your monitor's native resoultion), you might want to edit pitch/yaw factor to make it feel more uniform when moving up/down and left/right on the mouse. i did this long time ago but not since they started supporting widescreen resolution.

also, is your mouse acceleration setting on?

I raise DPI when in the rorsch rail gun. I drop it when I am in a walker or as the gunner in the gunship. The rest of the time I leave it alone. My settings are 2000, 550, and 450.

Thanks to all for the input so far.
Changing DPI on the fly is something I do when entering Rorsch or Walker, like some others here. My mousewheel is responsible for changing DPIs. So changing DPI like Alex does is not for me :)
I will try to set my DPI to 600 an test it in singleplayer. Lets see what happens.

I personally mess up my aim more when doing things like that... you sort of break the consistency that you have when you only use one single sensitivity that you get used to. But it depends a lot on the games you play, and your playing style overall.

1800 DPI, default settings, at least I think it is as I haven't played 2142 in a while. My mouse settings are at default in all other games at least.

Mouse acceleration or not then... tricky question. The good thing about having accel is that you can turn around quickly when you want to, and fine tune your aim when slowly moving the mouse. Bad is obviously that you won't move the mouse just as far every time you move the mouse, so if need to quickly need to do a 180 degree turn it will take longer to regain accuracy, where as with no accel you could be accurate much faster.

Basically, pick what you want if you use a low sensitivity, and don't use accel with high sensitivity.

I think it also goes on what type of mouse you have, I first had a
MX™518

And though there is no way you can get better than this for FPS but alas the middle wheel went and I had to buy another, there were no more MX518 in the computer store so I ended up with a Razor Diamondback


At first was a bit unsure as it is 1800dpi compared to the MX518 1600 but once you get the hang of it, it is lethal and combined with a Razor Destructor Precision Mouse Mat,

Yeah I have the MX518, really good mouse. Play on high sensitivity dont know the numbers, I just play around with it till I feel comfortable.

Why would you change dpi at the last second? Switching for one dpi to another is going to mess you up. You'll never get used to it. More chances for you to mess up. Why not keep it the same at all times what is the advantage at all....lol
Usually people of higher skill level play with higher sensitivity.
Sometimes when I am playing bad I up my dpi and ease into it. Usually works and if you have the same accuracy with 3200 dpi and 600 dpi you have a big advantage.
