Would be a great time to be a fly on a wall, wonder whether it's the Packs (I doubt this would be free tbh, hope so though!) or more likely the no CD :salute:
It's definately not the **** that is causing the office politics. To quote the guy in charge of the update (Bazajaytee):
"No its not that. You will be happy to know that you will not need your DVD in the drive to boot BF2 after the update."
I'm hoping too that it's the booster packs. I have bought both and would love to be able to play them more often. Would be great to be able to incoprorate them into the map rotation without clearing out the server when a booster drops in.

Same here. I hope that it is, but fear that it isn't. Since I bought the boosters I've never had an on-line game with them. It would make a nice change not to have to play against the computer for those maps.
Then again, if it isn't that or the DVD issue, what could it be?
I'd love to be able to play the Booster packs for the first time despite having bought one of them over 3 years ago. That along with insta-prone penalty will squeeze out a few more hours of BF2 for me.
They clearly are not making any more money off them anyway.
Count me as another who bought both boosters but would like to see them released for free. I doubt they're bringing in that much revenue at this stage and giving them away could only help increase server rental revenues (possibly by quite a bit). Both were excellent additions to BF2, but like others have mentioned they split up the community and weren't convenient for players to obtain. Allowing everybody to have the full BF2 experience could really breathe some new life into the community.
It's been years since they've been released and while I wish I had more play time on the boosters after having paid for them, I wouldn't feel cheated at all if everybody got them for free now. I've spent $20 on worse.
Well, I agree, we'd all love to see the boosters released for free but I doubt that will happen. Although, I don't really think there is any money left to be made from them so it would be a nice gesture by EA/DICE.

I seriously doubt EA would approve of letting players get something for free ever. It would be a great thing though, because i have never played them and have heard great things about those maps. But still, it's EA, a company who never cares about gamers' wants or convenience once the game is released.
Something good hopefully, though tbh they couldn't really be having a tiff about anything aside from the booster packs, or at least a few customs?
I hope so too, but I'm preparing myself for a huge disappointment. On the other hand, I'll be happy to be disappointed about my disappointment, if you see what I mean. Still expecting to be disappointed, though.
P.S. That post makes me look as though I've just drunk the amount of beer that I've just drunk!

EA has infact released old retail games as freeware. Two notables are Command & Conquer 95 Gold and Command & Conquer Red Alert. Each release served as a promotional build-up for their respective sequels.
While EA would do good for BF2's longetivity by making those boosters free, the question is whether people will actually play on those maps. Personally I wouldn't mind if the patch were delayed another three months to implement: all ranked servers must utilize the full map cycle. The 24/7 single map stuff should be relegated to unranked.
I don't doubt that you'd see some of the servers that currently run full or near-full map rotations like TTP, FCW, USQC allmaps, etc. start to run EF and AF maps should they be included as mandatory download. I know TTP's 2142 server runs, or at least used to run, NS maps in its normal rotation. I'm sure some people would run it. Probably no 24/7 AF or EF servers, but imagine having an Operation Road Rage squeezed in between a Dalian Plant and Dragon Valley.

What about Battlefield 1942? 4 new maps, a whole bunch of new vehicles, weapons and soldiers. All for free.
