No you have to install at least the 1.2 patch before SF, otherwise it won't work. SF always resets your version to 1.2 but the patch doesn't come with the game, so it has to be past that otherwise it can't install.

No you don't, Special Forces automatically patches BF2 so that it can install. Just leave BF2 alone after you install it and install SF immediately after.

I got it

1. Install Battlefield 2.
Note: If you have the Battlefield 2 Deluxe pack, install and skip to step 3.
2. Install Battlefield 2: Special Forces.
3. Install the 1.41 full patch.
4. Install Battlefield 2: Armored Fury.
5. Install Battlefield 2: Euro Force.
6. Install the 1.41 full patch once again.
