    A portal multiplayer game?

What if they made a portal multi player game where there could be two to four people, each with a portal gun and your goal is to be the first to get to a purple portal to advance to the next level.

The teams can fight each other by throwing their portals over another persons, causing the people to fall into traps that kill them forcing a respawn. If it was a four person game, each of you would have one color of the portal so your team mate has to work with you to make it to the purple portal. Or, you both have to make it through to win, since its hard finding teamwork online.

Would this game take off or would it be a fad and not worth it? I dont keep tabs on half life games, does anyone know if this is in the works already?

    Re: A portal multiplayer game?

Valve hinted at Portal 2 back in February 2008. When it will come, nobody knows. People are wanting Episode 3 above anything though.

As for mods; for Portal, they are few and far between. The one mod that looked promising offering new maps didn't go down well as it was far too difficult and people didn't like it.

I guess it's just all quiet on the Portal front.

Either the portal gun shows up in Episode 3, or in a sequal to Portal, or possibly (but unlikely) both.

Multiplayer would be tricky - first idea is some sort of race gamemode or territorial control. But it's hard to imagine a multiplayer fps without actual weapons.

If you add weapons, like the hl2 stuff or something original found in an eventual Portal 2, then you could maybe have some deathmatch modes. Thing is that good players probably would fly all over the map leaving new players no chance (fun if you have the patience to learn but not really otherwise) but if anyone could make this work it would be Valve.

      Nothing confirmed though, all speculations.

Yeah, I thought about the "advanced" player curve, but I am not sure how you would get around that either.

I guess the idea isn't so much about weapons but being quick and outthinking your opponent. "Now youre fighting with portals."

Maybe if the game wasnt made to where you could die, but be trapped and able to escape by thinking about how the portals work. Everyone could figure that out. Of course, then the maps would become stale quickly as you figure out how to get out of each situation. Of course that happens in FPS games now.

Maybe a vs. portal game is just a pipe dream

Nothing wrong with a hard game really. There's way too few of those nowadays :) Maybe just by nerfing airstrafing it would be good enough for newbie players too.

I can't really imagine anything else than HL2DM with a portal gun instead of a gravity gun though. It's fun to think about it, I hope Valve comes up with a better idea.

Portal: Prelude, the official free Portal modification website. Download the game, check the ladderboard, and access a lot of goodies.

Nearly 1 million downloads. Despite being difficult, it is popular.

We had it on TGF before TGF failed. In the time that it was working, we had nearly 6000 downloads in the first few days.
