    where is it coming from?

    when your teammates are spawning from a beacon and fall out of the sky in pods, where are they coming from? are they coming down from space? or a really high altitude titan?

    and orbital strikes obviously coming from some sort of satellite system orbiting the earth?

    After a little bit of observation, I found out that each beacon spawn and each orbital strike coincided with Chuck Norris, in the real world, ripping ***.

    Needless to say, Chuck Norris eats a lot of baked beans.

        soldiers pod down from high aircraft and or titans in orbit, orbital strikes are probably just regular artillery strikes from a distant location seeing the fashion that it hits

          but even at high altitudes in a gunship, orbitals still look like they are coming straight down. I think they come from a satellite orbiting the atmosphere, hence the name "orbital".

            Indeed. Also, note that when you are commander, the lady's sexeh voice calls it an 'orbital bombardment'. I like how it gets there almost immediately upon summoning, whereas BF2's arty (mercifully) took about 8 seconds after selecting the strike before the shells actually began to hit, although in that case they were firing from ground-based cannons and did come in at an angle.

              i think the lady calls emp strikes orbital bombardment, no?

              so according to field, there are titans up in space orbiting the earth? and soldiers pod out of it and land on a tiny beacon?

                Note that when you first spawn on a beacon it makes a whoosh sound, the same sound that it makes when launching a pod off of a titan.

                    Actually they are called orbital because of the pattern in which the ordnance is deployed. If you are commanding it's particularly easy to notice that bombs are dropped both on the point you select, and in a circular pattern around it ("orbiting" the immediate target zone).

                    This is in contrast to a more conventional deployment, such as a strafing run.

                    The bombs may well be coming from a satellite in orbit around the earth, though this would seem to be neither here nor there when it comes to understanding why the orbital strike is so named.

                    If the satellite were in geostationary orbit, then this would not produce a consistent circular bomb pattern, so much as a rain of bombs on one single spot (unless they used something like JDAM guidance, in which case the bombs could be sent anywhere on the Camp Gib map from that sort of initial deployment height).

                    If the satellite were in non-geostationary orbit then again the deployment pattern would be different from what we see (this time wildly different in fact, as it raced across the sky dropping bombs in a long line!).

                    Either way, there is no reason to think that "orbital" has anything to do with the position relative to the earth of the (supposed) satellite, and every reason to think that it refers to the pattern of the bombs landing.

                      Do you really think that the designers put that much thought into it?

                      Designer one: Dude, what should be do about the artillery?

                      Designer two: Let's call it orbital, that sounds really cool and futuristic.

                        Well, they probably thought that having writing on the button which says "make the bombs drop in a little circle" would look a bit g4y, not to mention long-winded. So, they called it "orbital strike" instead.

                        My lengthy explanation was in no way supposed to suggest that the designers has been that thorough and rigorous in their considerations. I was simply being clear in pointing out that "orbital" is almost certainly not being used in the sense which it might otherwise be when discussing conventional satellites.

                              A partial description of the quantum state of an electron (or other particle) orbiting the nucleus of an atom. Different orbitals have different shapes and orientations, depending on the energy of the electron, its angular momentum, and its magnetic number. Orbitals have no clear boundaries; the shape of an orbital, as depicted graphically, shows only the regions around the nucleus in which an electron has a relatively high probability of being found. No more than two electrons (each with opposite spin) can coexist in a single orbital because of the Pauli exclusion principle.
