Help me with my PS3 troubles please :)

My PS3 is being a b*tch, basically. I'm not sure if it's the game, or if it's the PS3 itself but something is f*cking up. I wonder if anyone can help? Oh, and this is happening with CoD4, as I don't have any other games online i'm not sure if it will be so easy to diagnose.

Basically what will happen sometimes is I will be in a game, and then I will get Connection Interrupted. Then the screen will go blank, the disc will make the 'whirring' noise it does and then sometimes it will take me back to the multiplayer screen and say "Server connection timed out" OR the screen will just stay blank.
Ok, it's blank right now after that and it just popped up in the corner telling me a friend logged off. So i'm confused as to what is happening.

Other times it will also go to this blank screen at the end of a match, when it goes to the lobby and does the intermission between maps, it will go blank then before I get to the lobby.

When it has the blank screen, I will hold down the power button, but it won't turn off, so I have to use the complete shutdown button on the back. Then when I turn it back on, it will make the beeping noises it makes if it restarts.

Ok, I while typing out this essay it has gone back to the multiplayer screen and say "Server connection timed out". So it wasn't dead, it was just taking a LONG time.

To stop this happening in the future, and the save me from losing my rag with it, has anybody encountered similar problems and can help me out with how to fix it?

It's one of two things (I also play CoD4 on PS3);
The disk has been damaged.
Or
The PS3 is having trouble connecting to CoD4 Online (mine used to be dire...) and you aren't being patient enough with the blank screen (like CoD4 on PC freezes when you get kicked for Server Disconnected, only PS3 just goes black).

The reason it won't power off eludes me... Maybe CoD4 brought out a patch to stop people resetting midgame to help server lagging..?

Which PS3 have you got?

I've got an old 60gb one, and various games tend to go to a blank screen or freeze for a couple seconds... kinda annoying, and whenever it freezes completly - I have to hold the power button down for about 10 seconds before it switches off (I'm assuming you don't hold it down this long - you should try holding it down longer then it will turn off and reset)

I think it's probably because the PS3 is so old, and it's dirty, so I should probably clean it soon... (although it's my brother's so he should really clean it) >_>

Which PS3 have you got?

I've got the 40GB one.


And I just realised, while it's on the blank screen, if I hold down the button in the middle of the controller with the Sony logo, it brings up the Quit Game, Turn Off Console etc menu. But from this point if I press Quit Game, it will go blank for about 1 minute and then reset the PS3. Turn Off System also does the same thing I think.

Oh, and now it seems the sound if f*cking up too. It will work fine for a while, then just die. Sometimes it will come back but more recently is hasn't been.

The CoD4 issues locking up as it where I would probably put down to PSN being seriously ****ty on certain games thought I've never played CoD4 on PS3 so I'm not really sure.

As for your sounds issues, is that just CoD4 as well or all games?

The sounds issues is only for CoD4, although the only games I have played on it are CoD4, Assassins Creed and Killzone 2 demo. I have had no problems with any of the other games whatsoever.

Just found out, even if i'm part way through a game, and press Start, Leave Game, I still get the blank screen..

TBH I'd return the game if you bought it off the high street and get another one just to rule that out, though if it blanks out on a couple of different occasions chances are it's possibly just an issue with the game. Though the sound, who knows.

I'm assuming you've got the most recent system update and CoD4 patch yar?

I think it's probably too late to return it, but i'll try cleaning it to see if I can sort it out a bit.

You could try a total system reset.

No, it's like using system restore on windows to a previous save... well I'm pretty sure you don't lose anything, you just hold the ps3 button down for like a minute or something

Ok, it's fixed, it was the disc. It's my mate's game and so I thought oh sh*t I hope I havn't broken it. But when I got the disc out of the PS3 it had some greasy smeared fingerprints on it.. :dead: And I didn't put them there, the dirty b*stard.
So yeah, I gave it a proper cleaning, and now it's running fine, no issues at all. :thumbsup:
