Logitech G5 mouse causing COD4 crashes?

I recently was lucky enough to get a new 24 inch 3 GHz iMac with an ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics processor with 512MB of GDDR3 memory. I bought COD4 (Mac OS version) for it and it worked perfectly. The supplied Apple mouse is not great for gaming or 3D so I bought a Logitech G5 Laser Mouse. I know it doesn’t have Mac OS drivers but I like the look and feel of it and works fine for my 3D work as I don’t use all the extra functions, all I really needed was a nice comfortable mouse with separate areas for left and right buttons.

Anyway I noticed that ever since I have this mouse and I’m playing COD4 it just completely freezes the whole machine about 3 mins into the game, every time. I can’t even force-quit the game or app-switch to the Finder. I have to power-down the machine. As soon as I switched back to my Apple mouse it works fine. I did a search for the problem and found some others are having similar crashes. Maybe there is a problem with this mouse and COD4, anyway I hope this helps.

That mouse is not designed for Apple at all. I used the G5 in CoD4 on PC and never had an issue.

That and the G9, that I know for sure, use setpoint software in Windows to work a bit better. I found that using a generic driver for the mice doesn't quite work well. Perhaps on a Mac, not at all.

Yes I know it’s not designed for Mac like I said in my post. I just thought it might be worth mentioning in case it was an issue with that specific mouse and the game. After reading your post, turns out it isn’t, thanks for posting by the way.

Seeing as Macs use the same hardware as pretty much all Windows systems these days I thought it might be worth a try. And yes I know the OS is completely different but it can’t hurt to rule out various avenues, process of elimination and all that...

Having been a Mac gamer for years before the recent advent of Intel hardware I know how frustrating it is when a good game crashes regularly believe me. so it’s always worth a try to help someone out with their problem. Us Mac gamers are finally starting to get some really cool games as a result of the Intel change-over and COD4 is excellent and runs like a dream on the iMac although I am deeeeestroyed on the servers but at least it’s great fun.

I know you mentioned it in your first post, but the end of it made it seem like it was a game issue, which may make others think some problem they are having is due to their mouse and this specific game.

Games crash on a Mac? I thought PCs just get all that joy

I did a bit more investigation and it seems to be an issue with the firmware for the graphics card. In case there any more iMac gamers out there with the same problem, here is the fix:
