Really High Ping Problem

Hey,

I just started playing bf2 again (or I really want to start playing again) but I'm experiencing some serious problems.
System Specs:
AMD athlon 64 X2 4200+
2GB ram
ATI Radeon HD 4800

I'm currently getting a good internet signal, at 78mbps through a wireless N network

Whenever I try to play bf2 online, I always get kicked for high ping (around 400ish everytime). I tried to update my punkbuster file and I'm not 100% sure if it worked

If anyone has any idea as to why my internet would lag at such a high speed on such a capable system, please let me know

ps - I am not using windows wireless zero configuration utility but instead the software that came with my card. i did the whole punkbuster thing manually

As a general rule, wireless + bf2 = not great.

If you can play with a cable, do that.
Otherwise, try using wireless zero config instead of the software. I used to have the same problem and that fixed it.

Let us know how it goes, we may be able to help further as I noticed your ping of 123 ms is high if testing to a server in your country (would be in the UK, US?)

I don't have cable and won't any time soon, get pings of 20 odd to London servers 250 miles away using every trick in the book, most problems are internal house wiring, you will hear advice like: use the test socket without extensions etc.

Biggest boost can be (if you have the choice), the gamer oriented ISP, some of the every day common ones are rubbish.

okay, so using wireless zero configuration tool helped a lot - some servers now are pretty stable around 70ish ping with the occasional spike up to around 200

other servers though stay around anywhere from 500-700, pretty frustrating

i just dropped about 400$ on a wireless router and wireless desktop card and my internet signal is really good (I understand that ping and download speeds are different, but I know my signal is more than decent)

how would I go about changing my ip to a seperate gaming ip?

not sure what you mean by gaming ip - like i said, even with a good wireless connection, playing bf2 isn't so great, you should really look into pluging a cable into your router and if your problems persist, then we can probably assume your ISP is just not very good. And play on servers near you in any case. If you share your connection with other people that can cause ping spikes too.
