BF2 load fail: Windows XP 64 Bit

When I load BF2 [in XP Pro 64 Bit, SP2], I get the splash 'Battlefield 2' graphic then screen goes to -and stays- black. I also get an error message tone (but no actual error message box). I've tried 2 fresh installs+patch 1.41, reverting back to DirectX 9c and changing my monitor settings (800x600x60Hz). I have had no luck. My machine plays other games (ie: Left 4 Dead) fine. I don't know the root of this problem. My best guess would be that it's driver-related, because the point at which I get the error tone is when BF2 would be resetting it's native monitor settings. Drivers are all current. Any help is appreciated.

Delete the Battlefield 2 Folder in My Documents.

I had the same thing a few months ago. Doing this fixed it.

Deleted the Battlefield 2 folder from My Documents, but the problem persisted. Thanks for the suggestion!

Change +fullscreen 1 to +fullscreen 0 in the shortcut target box and you might get an error message.

Thanks Natt, the error message I now see is: "DirectX version 9.0c or higher is required to run Battlefield 2. Please install DX9c and try again." Now its just a matter of figuring out why my DX is not being recognized.

That is the updater that I have been using. However, every time I run that app, I get a message saying that I have a current or newer version of DX already installed and that installation is not necessary. Extremely frustrating. I have already tried uninstalling DX numerous times and repeating a fresh install, but I still get that message.

So, I downloaded and ran a DirectX uninstall app and uninstalled BF2. I restarted and installed BF2 and let it install DX9c. Now, I'm getting a new error message when I try to run BF2 that says, "The procedure entry point OpenVxDHandle could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNAL32.dll." I've installed DX10, reinstalled BF2 and still getting the same error message.

Make sure you're installing DX9 and not DX10. You may have to redownload the DX9 executable and reinstall from there.

                        :yay: Problem solved! :yay:

I ended up just reinstalling my copy of Superior XPx64. Wasn't a big deal since I had just installed it two days prior. I lost nothing, really. From a clean install of XP and drivers, I loaded BF2 vanilla (+ patch 1.41) right away. This time, the installer actually installed DX9.0c. It runs great now and I even have AIX 2.0 and Hard Justice running. Thanks, all, for the suggestions and help.

I am unsure how you managed to install DX10 on XP... but whatever, I guess you already have it fixed.

I remember there being a patch that let you play Vista games on XP (specifically Halo 2). I'm not sure if that had anything to do with DX10.

I found a program called, aptly, DirectX Eradicator. However useful the app might be for fixing corrupt registries or bad installs, it did not seem to help me in my case.
