You are probably seeing the Special Forces, Armored Fury, and Euro Forces servers. They are all BF2 expansion packs.

Custom maps for BF2 do exist, however almost no servers run them 24/7.

Mods would be a good way to expand your BF2 playing. I play about 90% modded BF2 now.

Get the AIX mod -- most people enjoy it much more than standard BF2 and there's a ton of maps available for it: http://aixtended.com/

If you like lots of open spaces and armored vehicles in large groups, make sure you get "Highway Tampa" It's my all-time favorite map.............

Tampa is included with the newest patch. And a Chinese city map is coming out with 1.5.

Just be sure you have the latest patch, 1.41. If you're missing Wake Island and/or Road to Jalalabad be sure to download the patch.
