How to run multiple installs of BF2?

Just curious how to have both a 1.0 and 1.41 install on your HDD?

Tried to play 1.0 tonight but I get an error for duplicate CD key. Playing 1.41 is no issue.

I take it your not playing the game at the same time as you will get that message despite what patch your on, i also take it that no one else has your CD key apart from you. Got to check these things.

The only other method i can think of is that with EA/Dice's account tracker it auto detects the patch your on for your account, so it says your on 1.41, but yet you have a duplicate account for 1.0, so its going uh oh i dunt fink so sunny and giving you the epic fail stamp.

Don't know, give us some more details like, are you using the same account for both patch versions?

EA/Dice don't link patch versions to accounts. Try it for yourself.

The only way he is getting that error is if someone is playing on the same CD-KEY at the exact moment he is trying to play. Stryker, did you buy a new key online because you were caught hacking? If this is the case, then you are SOL. Buy the game in a store and this kind of thing wont happen.

That would make sense, only the fact he said his 1.41 works yet 1.0 doesn't would indicate that its not a duplicate CD key.

But like i said, its the first thing that popped into my mind if someone else had his CD key.

One possibility is that he's switched from 1.41 to 1.0 and the EA/punkbuster tracker is still picking up him playing 1.41 so its giving a phantom message that there must be 2 people with the same key.

I am aware that the tracker continues to track your user data until the next map on any server, so that could be a good evaluation of what could be happening, i know that you can join another server after being on one without any problems, but not sure if that applies to patch switching within such a small time frame.

I gave up. It wasn't just me that got it either. We just patched our server to 1.41 and running Special Forces now. :)

You'd need to change the CD key in the registry every time you switched versions. The reason is that 1.0 stores the key in plain text while 1.03 and later store it in an encoded form. To find the key search for 'ergc' in the registry. I would:
                Install BF2 1.0
                copy BF2 folder to a new name (e.g. BF2-1.0)
export the registry key to a .reg file using regedit
                install 1.41 patch
export the registry key to another .reg file

Then you should be able to run either version after updating the registry from the appropriate .reg file.

(It is possible to encode the plaintext key without installing the patch if you have the right tool: BF2CDKeyCheck.exe.)
