Left 4 dead doesnt close properly...

whenever i hit Quit on the left 4 dead main menu it just freezes, alt-tabbing/task manager and using the end program/process wont work, i have to power off my pc and turn it back on.

Hmm interesting, alt F4 it next time see if that works. I am aware that L4D takes a crud load of processor power to close because it has to run through steam to complete the action.

Like with any problem on a PC, leave it long enough and eventually it will execute, imagine this, A computer uses a stack execution cycle. When a game like left 4 dead closes it does this.


Program Close Left 4 Dead <----First off of the stack
Steam Process Close Left 4 Dead <----Second off of the stack
ect...
ect...
ect...

What your system is doing is working through the first cycle Program Close Left 4 dead, this takes a while to close anyway, if you start hitting Ctrl Alt Del, it does this.

Task Manager Load <--- First Off Of The Stack
End None Responsive Program <--- Second Off Of The Stack
Program Close Left 4 Dead
Steam Close Left For Dead
ect...
ect...
ect...

Giving it more to do, thus making it longer before the first execution - Program Close Left 4 Dead is performed.

In normal terms i say this, if it does it again, DONT Touch A Thing, if it remains like that for more than 3 Minutes, 5 Maximum, Hit Alt F4, this will start the End Un-responsive Program Cycle, then wait 5 minutes morious, if your system is still un-responsive then consider the fact that there is a corruption with the end program execution on your Left 4 Dead Game, which is generally resolved by re-installing the game.

A few ways you know your entire system has crashed:

• Hit Capslock, Scroll Lock or Num lock, if the lights don't go off or on on the keyboard your system has crashed.
  
• Look at your tower, if you have a red, green, blue light flickering your system is fine, if its not your system has crashed.
  
• If you have a laser mouse, turn it over, if the laser dims the system is fine, if it stays bright the system has crashed.

Do these things, if the system has crashed you will have to manually restart it, if it hasn't, and the above work, then just wait, your system is moving as fast as it can, don't be impatient.

Remember the more you press buttons and get pissed off the slower your computer will move, opening task manager and hitting alt f4 repeatedly is making the computer work slower, hit it once and wait.

Press ctrl alt delete, click on the Processes tab, and end steam.exe.

???? Why would he do that, its not steam thats the problem, its Left 4 Dead and L4D has its own exe.

Going into processes and ending them that way is the right way to go if you want to fubar your PC, your overiding the Process which is a bad thing.

Ending Steam will also end L4D. Or you can just end hl2.exe and stop Steam normally. And no, that won't "fubar" your PC I end processes (including many idle processes) all the time since I've had my computer (3 years about) and it hasn't done anything to it.

My point was, why end steam? yeh it closes left for dead but its not the problem, the problem came from left for dead not steam, so closing steam would be pointless.

As for ending processes your either very lucky or have a wide enough knowledge to know what your closing, you can't go closing processes it doesn't help your computer at all, so you've been lucky, and your seriously telling me that you've had the PC for 3 years without a single problem? I highly doubt that, whether you can physically see it or its internal it still fubars your computer.

Actually, all system critical processes are locked by the Operating System and cannot be ended. Therefore, any process you do close, can be done so safely as it isn't required for the computer to carry on running stably.

Although, closing random processes can mean some functions disappear until you reboot your PC. Unless the process is saving, encoding or processing data, it will not corrupt anything. It simply flags the process to be killed.

Closing personal .exes (ones that have your name by them) have nothing to do with your system. Closing SYSTEM, NETWORK SERVICE, and LOCAL SERVICE .exe's can cause problems, but if you close anything vital, you can reboot and it will turn back on. But closing ones with your name of them (such as steam.exe or hl2.exe) will not hurt your system.
