A quick Google search has many sites, including IGN, saying that it is expected sometime this year (TBD 2009). Sounds like an official date has not been given yet.

I knew that but I didn't know the exact date - Wikipedia say Q1, 2009.

Personally, I thought Arma (1) had some quite good design features but was just executed badly. I think most people are waiting for OFP2 as they said they will have different modes to cater for different players, Arma 2 does however looks worth a try :)

ArmA2 will blow OF2 out the water from the current info available.

Sorry for the cross-post (I have this in the news section in an OpFlashpoint2 thread), but I figured some people with good answers may not check both of these sections, so I thought I'd ask it here as well:

But I have some questions for those who are familiar with 1 or both games.
- What is the multiplayer mode like...is there the "classic" Team A vs Team B playing TDM or Objective modes, or is it always co-op players vs CPU opponents?
- if there is Team A vs Team B, is it always long, drawn-out rounds with people sneaking across a huge map (if so, how long?), or are there any quicker game modes? (not run 'n gun, but just not the painstakingly slow play either. Something in between)

I am looking forward to the slow, careful, sim-type gameplay, but just wondering if it is only that, or if these games allow for something more.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Armed Assault 2

Okay, I played OF1 and I own (and play^_^) ArmA.

- Multiplayer is anything you want it to be. You can set up PvP battles over the intire island, or have you and some friends vs CPU on CTF. As well as this, you can download CoOp and SP missions. It is all about the 'mods'. I find that I prefer doing massive battles with just me and AI in editor, but I make it that I can invite friends to play. Although the Online is fun, there is such a massive variety in MP, I find it easier to just make what I want.

In regards to the pace, it depends on the gametype. Any gametype larger than 1x1km will have vehicles. Vehicles range from Push bikes to Jets (of course you can DL more, but I'll come to that later). Jeeps are armed with weak MGs or Automatic GLs. The Tanks and APCs (and AA vehicles) are fairly fast depending on terrain. There is also a wide range of 'Pods', AA, AT and MG. Along with Supply Trucks, Ammo, Refeul, Repair and Transport. Again, these are medium fast, but will be targets for enemies as the tanks cannot effeciently operate without them.

It's kind of Rock, Paper, Scissors. Jets can take out Choppers, AA takes out Jets, Tanks take out AA, Infantry takes out tanks, Chopper takes out infantry, Jet takes out chopper :]

^obviously it is a lot deeper than that, because of enemy tanks, AT pods, AT Planes (A-10, Cross Of Death ^_^), but you get the idea.

Being Inf, you can take out anything. You can pick up new weapons, laser designators, NV goggles, Javelins, Stingers, Smoke Grenades, Binoculars... and with the AddOns Feature, anything is possible.

Now, the Downloads. This is what makes this game. You can download almost anything from C130 Transports to Street Signs. You can also get total conversion mods, sound mods (mostly just louder^_^), FX mods (improved explosions, big black smoke clouds from destroyed tanks, jets being shot down = fun to watch ^_^).

To have a look at what there is available, look here: www.armaholic.com <- it's the best site out there and it's got a great community if you don't ask stupid questions

Also, with ArmA2 and ArmA, you can port models. So OF1 units are in ArmA, and ArmA2 will have ArmA and OF1 Units.

Of course, it's not all about the mods. You can do so much, just in editor, you can set up AI to attack, defend, move, transport, raid, seek and destroy. Anything, dynamic weather and time (rain, fog, nighttime etc). You can place any unit, group it (if nessesary) and tell it where to go. No fight I've had has ever been the same. You can also adjust how much fuel, ammo, armour and skill the unit has.

Screens: http://www.xfire.com/screenshots/timmygod/

^MOST are either Addons or taken in the IC-ArmA tournament, however, there is some fairly unique shots (and a helluva a lot of them ^_^)

Video:

This is just me and some mates messing around in Jets (which I made in editor, set up respawns and launched, they joined, and we shot this :yay:)

I dunno if I've missed anything... OF1 and ArmA are very similar, but ArmA is newer (and better imho, hence why I bought it over OF1).

Feel Free to hit up my xfire to talk deeper / watch me broadcast?

Re: Armed Assault 2

A lot of people are comparing this to BF2.

Please, the games both have guns - and the similarities end there.

Whiskey, to summarise what Pieman has said above - forget EVERYTHING you know about CoD and BF2. Although I love CoD 4, I must say, it is very limiting - TDM, Dom, SAB, thats really about it.

Armed Assault is best played in co-op, due to its ENORMOUS size. You would have trouble locating the enemy base in a PvP mission. Co-op missions can feature basically anything you like, as Pieman stated.

Think of it as Project Reality - but even more realistic, and without the game-mode limits of BF2.

It takes 3 people to crew a tank, there are numerous ammo types to manage (SD and standard), choose the wrong one, and you will be found faster than you can say "Amerikana!"

Where Sloi would be owning with his seat switching skills, he may have trouble simply flying the helo (sorry Sloi, just an example). The environments are destructible, houses will collapse, and you can get injured from the debris.

This is just ArmA 1 mind you. Its probably as realistic as you can get without spending over $100 AUD.

The problem is, that the mission makers tend not to make...realistic missions. Instead, you have missions forcing you to Capture the Island (usually with no more than two or three people), and in the rare instance you have over 10 players, you don't get real teamwork.

If you love BF2, or CoD, and its gameplay, and you are perfectly fine with their gameplay, and do not require strategic gameplay - by all means, stick to those games. Please don't come to ArmA and turn it into an arcady experience. Thats what CoD and BF are for.

Thanks for all that info guys, I appreciate it. There's a lot here, so I'll have to go over it a few times.

Nah, that's not my intent. Although there are things about COD and BF2 that I do like, in general, they are a bit too arcadey/spastic for me, and seem to encourage some really lame gameplay from a lot of people. There's a lot of things about those games that I hate. I'm ideally looking for something more tactical and teamwork oriented.

As I wrote, I am foremost of all wanting to try the "full on" slow, careful, "sim" gameplay that ArmA2 and OPF2 offer. I've always wished for that in some of those other games...actually working together as a team, with good planning, and people actually doing what they're supposed to.

But I wasn't sure if that was only possible as co-op, or if it could be played out as PvP as well. And I wanted to get an idea of time...if I only have 30-60 minutes to play one night, I obviously don't want to get involved in a 3-hr MP game.

There's a lot of shooters coming out between now and early 2010. I wanted to know if games like ArmA2/OPF2 could be used to play any style someone wanted, or if they only functioned well as "sim" games, and things like MW2/BFBC2 would fill the need for anything faster.
