USB Microphone - headset or desktop?

Hi, I am finally looking in to using the built-in voip in 2142.

I was wondering what people here used? I have 6.1 speakers and am leaning towards a desktop mic, but I am wondering that would pick-up to much noise from the speakers as opposed to a headset?

Any recommendations are appreciated.

Ive always used a headset and 5.1 speakers.

I send voice chat(vent/Teamspeak/Xfire) through my headphones and mic.

All game sounds I send to 5.1 speakers.

I wish there was an option in most games to send the VOIP output to a particular sound device.That way VOIP would go through headphones(On Board Audio) and all other effects are sent to 5.1 speakers(soundcard).


and yes desktop mic will pick up a lot of sounds from your speakers....

headset only. dont torture the ppl in your squad w/ forcing them to hear your ingame sound from your desktop speakers, fed back thru your mic!

Save your 5.1 for something useful like music or movies.

I have a unidirectional, low impedance, mic sitting on my desktop that I've been using for a few months now.
I have it mostly because I use it primarily to record music for various reasons and I need something with much higher quality than your standard headset mic.



I usually set it next to me so my mouth is about 6 or so inches away from the tip of the mic, and then set the levels to work appropriately. I've never experienced any feedback with the mic and it wouldn't ever be an issue unless you were to turn the levels up really far, and place it directly in front of a speaker.


If you're not the brightest bulb in the box, buy a crappy mic and place it closer to your speakers than your head, and turn its levels up farther than they need to, you're obviously going to get problems.

Completely agree. Get a USB headset, which gets easily picked up by XP as soon as you plug it in and gets set to default sound input/output device. The only thing you need to do is test it with Windows Recorder to be sure the mic volume is adequate. Then you never have to touch it again, works every time.

but usb headsets have downsides as they cause trouble with things like fraps for eg my fraps will only record mic input and nothing else soundwise and ofc no software renderer is ever going to be as good as a full soundcard

Yeah, the software renderer, agree. Hmmm, should have thought about that but since I am happy with onboard sound, I probably wouldn't notice the diff if I went full speaker or USB headset. What are fraps?

indeed again another fool not knowing how to use google. just incase u miss jakes post it is something used to record gameplay it is used when making frag videos etc
