    Re: Gta:iv

    The game is completely CPU-limited.
Quads and high-end C2D's (overclocked) should be ok to run the game, as long as you've got a reasonable graphics card.

On my specs I'm running with:

    Render Quality on high
The two distance sliders on 25.
The traffic density slider on 15.

    And I never lag.

Mind you, I crash when I try and access multiplayer.

8800GTX 768mb gets around 10-20fps most of the time in medium settings. It runs smooth enought hough, it would be nice if a performance bsaed patch was released IMO.

im just wondering how well it will run on my rig, and whether or not overclocking the cpu and getting 2mor gig of ram will help

Your PC is pretty similar to mine, I recommend getting an extra 2GIG and overclocking. They'll both make a difference. :)

There is allegedly already one in the works. Here is article that touches on the tech problems....

Rockstar Responds to Grand Theft Auto 4 PC Woes
by Chris Faylor Dec 04, 2008 10:14am CST

"Following reports of game-breaking problems with the recently-released PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV, publisher Rockstar has issued a statement, acknowledging that it is "aware that a small number of fans are having problems running GTA IV."

"We would like to assure them we are working to help solve these as quickly as possible," the studio told Voodoo Extreme. Rockstar suggests having issues contact local technical support--the number is in the game's manual--as well as check out the Rockstar Games Support website, which is "regularly updated."

Included on the website is this suggested fix for the missing textures issue, which Rockstar says "may be associated with third party graphical performance tuners," along with a list of some error codes and fixes, reproduced below.

It seems the company has yet to directly address complaints that some, but not all, users cannot adjust certain graphical settings, nor has it directly responded to complaints that some players on high-end PCs are experiencing low performance.

However, this document stresses that users of "current PC hardware are advised to use medium graphics settings," as "the higher settings are provided for future generations of PCs with higher specifications than are currently widely available."

As Shacknews previously noted, those experiencing the supposedly XP-only RMN40 error in Vista may be able to circumvent the error by installing Microsoft .NET 3.5 Framework and rebooting. The MMA10 error, not listed below, requires users to log out of the Rockstar Social Club multiplayer utility in order to play. "

              On a side note.

TheHeartSmasher- If I download a game to an external hard drive, I CAN still play the game from that external hard drive as long as its on the computer I originally installed it on correct?

Yep, I used to do that with FSX and a few other games, until I upgraded my harddrives.
