Singleplayer Opinions? (finish SP before reading!)

*This thread will likely have spoilers in it, and we can't have a whole thread using the spoiler buttons, so you should probably finish Singleplayer before reading any further*

    ..

So, what do people think of the Singleplayer campaign? Too short/too long, tank controls, enemy AI, forced cinematics/storyline, etc, etc? Having just finished it myself, here's what comes to mind:

    - I'll echo what others said about the tanks...the controls were annoying at first, and I never really got totally used to them. Almost got completely stuck between a bunker and a tree. Having the flamethrower on it was a nice touch though.

    - I liked how moving around inside the plane was automatic once you pressed the button to move. I hated getting hung up on stuff while trying to move around manually in the plane in previous COD's, and/or not quite being sure where to go. This was was nice and simple, and I could just enjoy the mission and shoot stuff.

    - I liked the overall length. I know some people like really long SP campaigns, but I prefer the "leave them wanting more" approach. I usually try to play through the SP missions of all previous MOH and COD's every year or so, and sometimes I'm just praying for them to end because they're so long and I'm not enjoying it any more.

    - What I still find annoying is how COD often forces you to rush into a dangerous situation in order to trigger your team-mates to move forward. I hated dying from a random nade or some damn panzerschrek guy in a window who keeps respawning no matter how many times I shoot him. Same with how you're often "ordered" to go and save the day, but your team-mates don't seem to provide enough cover/support. I mostly got irritated with these things on the US missions, particularly the castle mission at the end. Not as bad in the Russian ones, except for the initial storming of the Reichstag building after wiping out the four 88's in the courtyard. I only played it on "normal" as well...I can only imagine how much worse it would be on the harder difficulties.

    - Japanese troops using Martyrdom...appropriate, but it made me want to strangle the guy who included it in the game. They got a couple cheap kills on me with that one.

    - Flamethrower was uber-fun to use. I loved BBQ'ing the enemy close-up.

    - I really liked the videos playing while each mission was loading. Loved the cinematics, graphics, and just the overall comic-book style. So much better than the old "reading the memo" loading screens.

    - the Kar98 just absolutely rocked! I hope it's like that in MP as well when it's unlocked.

    - I'll admit to using the article/videos in the News section to find the Death Cards...I didn't feel like scouring every map top to bottom. For the most part, they were in fairly reasonable places to find, but a couple I never would have found (ie. Heart of the Reich mission) without the hints.

    ..

Those are pretty much my initial thoughts...what are yours?

    - Bad tank controls

    - 100% agreed with your 4th point.

    - One thing I didn't like was the switching between the American and Russian campaigns too frequently. It would've felt much more coherent and engaging if you did one at a time.

    - The drama of certain characters' sudden deaths is not only over done, but kind of ironic considering the hordes of other allies getting mowed down.

    - FG42 is godly. I hope it's not overpowered in MP.

The FG42 is just as godly in MP, you get the heavy assault kit off the bat with the deluxe edition (talk about day-1 advantage).

Glad you wrote it for me lol, I completely agree with all of your points except I didn't use the deathcard videos for help. I ended up finding 9/13 w/o help and also not spending ages looking for them as I wanted to beat sp so I could move onto mp.

And as for the graphics/cinematics/load scenes, probably my most fav part of this game as silly as it sounds to some. I'm a graphic designer if that justifies it? But honestly, the theme, the way they circled around the graphics, the comic book style, including actual footage almost in a stream of consciousness type of way and some of it was gruesome video and yeah, whoever came up with all of that...give him/her a raise!

Which as I watched the credits roll, it makes you realize just HOW many people were involved in making this game, along with other games people play.

You summed it pretty much up in your points though. I would have liked the sp to maybe be a little more 'free roaming', but then it wouldn't be a CoD sp campaign now would it.

Overall, it was worth my time and money...since I also have mp. :p

Ah, yes, forgot about the FG42. It's a real beast. Very fun to use in SP. I grabbed one the other day in MP that had been dropped...it's quite deadly there as well.

i dont mind the linear playstyle of cod because i just like to shoot stuff i dont really give a crap about non-linear open ended gaming but there was ALOT of barriers and objects in the sp campaign that you really should have been able to jump over but couldnt. basically the sp campaign teaches you bad habits that arent useful in multiplayer like charging forward constantly and assaulting the enemy really hard and trying to run past them and go places. lol

Tank Controls should have been like the ones in Multiplayer.

The Plane mission was perfect. Though I only rescued one survivor. Lucky guy.

Length was just fine, though a little longer would have been nice.

I'm quite used to the usual COD style gameplay, so the "moving forward" issue isn't that annoying for me anymore.

The Japanese are so suicidal, it's frightening. What's more frightening is that they really did do this sort of stuff in WWII.

Flamethrower was awesome. Seeing somebody burn to death is quite gruesome though.

The Loading videos were great on the level of the COD4 ones.

I didn't get to use the Kar98k very much, execpt on the Night of the Undead level. There it's an amazing and cheap gun.

Haven't messed around in Co-op yet.

This is the bloodiest, most gory game I have ever played. And yet I'm ok with it. Back in 2004, even Half Life 2 would be too much.

Sub par. Pretty much sums it up for me. Graphics, Sounds, Gameplay, all sub par. Sounds in particular were the worst of any COD game with particular frustration on the M1 sounding like a .22 rifle or cap gun. Really regretting this purchase now.

As most suspected, the people that made this one are just not as talented as the CoD4 team. They did their best but perhaps in the future they should be taking on work more at their skill level and not the famed CoD series.

It is insane! Granted, Painkiller and UT games are bloody/gory, but those are so over the top, they're not realistic. This game does it perfectly in some areas. When guys heads are popping up over rocks and you nail them with a rifle to the head, the blood splatter is perfect, along with the way the head reacts to the shot! From the few videos of real people being shot to a bunch of movies, they seem to have nailed it.

And wow, I got into it last night. When attacking Shuri Castle, heading up the stairs, I bayoneted this guy as he jumped over the ridge, I then got caught from behind by a Japanese soldier, but on the ground I was able to knife him in the neck, then I got right up and bayoneted another two guys. I saw the first guy still slightly moving and I bayoneted him again...then I told myself to simma down and take a breath lol!!! I definitely got into it for that bit though as it was intense, up close combat. :) And I wouldn't have felt that 'in the moment' feeling without the blood, noises, and gore. They did it just right.

Oh, and I forgot to add, I do not like, or I think it's weird that missions kind of end randomly where people are just standing around and it just starts the loading screen for the next mission lol. A couple of the missions had an ending, but some were very awkward.

I agree with just about everyones statements as well.

                    Didnt like the tank controls.
                    Loved the graphics and sounds.
                    Flamethrower, nuff said.
Story load up was really good with actual footage.
Intense battles that got out of hand quick.
AI that didnt care if it died instead of cowering like it usually does.
                    Trench warfare.
Some great surprise rescues by your buddies. Every CoD had them, but I always like them

Great single player. I *think* I like the CoD4 SP more, but I really like how they did this one. It was very dramatic.

I actually preferred the SP of this game to CoD4 even though CoD4 had a more involved story behind it. I just felt the action in this SP felt more like a war than CoD4 ever did.

COD4's story was better IMO because the missions had more variety...and the storyline was better because it was a fictional conflict, just a bunch of battles. I still liked this one pretty well, though.

I think CoD5 SP didnt really have a story, it was just fighting out the last few battles of the war. I feel i had more connection with the russian characters then i ever did the marines in the story.

It was great, Only problem I can think of was it's too short, I finished it in one night..

I am addicted to the MP-40.. I love it!

P.S. The graphics are on par with CoD4.. atleast on PS3. Haven't played the PC version yet.. Hopefully it's more gory because I didn't see one stumped corpse thoughout the whole game T.T

P.P.S. Play it on hard settings, a retarded chimp with a gimpy eye could finish this game on medium..
