    Texture and Model discussion

I thought I would make a thread about textures and models in games. Particulary about these 2 points-

    1-More model, less texture.
I think games need to have more the object be part of the model itself and not part of the texture to make it "look" 3D. Does anyone else agree?

    2-Textures close up(noticed mainly in COD4,COD5)
Why is it that they make the textures look so great far away but when u get right up close it looks like crap. I'm guessing it makes it easier to run on older machines but still. I wish it looked good close up.

More models/complex models would mean more polygons and that wouldn`t be very perfomance friendly. Easier to use textures and everything that goes with em (shaders n ****).

Bump mapping and other forms of mapping take the 'bumps' from a high poly model and map it onto a texture, the result its a large performance gain as less polys have to be rendered/displayed and you still get an effective 3d look, I guess at some point in the future hardware will be good enough not to need it. I may be wrong but a higher rex texture should sort out the blurred/pixelated problem at close range.

A few examples of what im trying to show you.

Still, I wish I had a copy of COD4 where the textures looked great close up and there were more models in place of textures.

Aren't textures the same as TVs/monitors?

Low-res monitor looks good from far away, but very poor up close.
Low-res textures look good from far away (in terms of the game, not IRL), but very poor up close.

High-res monitor looks good far away, and close up.
High-res textures look good far away, and close up.

I think that's how it is.
