    Squad Features

Who's tried them? Who hasn't? Who didn't even know they were in the game?

    - Pressing [ESC] (as default) in-game brings up the large map, with options to create a new squad, or join an existing one.
    - When you join a squad, your squad-mates will show up in blue on the mini-maps.
    - As squad leader, you can bring up the map by pressing [X] (by default), put your cursor on a particular area, and press [fire] to issue a command for your guys to attack/move to that area (waypoint). They will see it marked as a blue circle/star on their map. As squad leader, you can also cancel an existing waypoint, and put it somewhere else.

Very basic stuff, not like BF2, but it's a start. Should hopefully help a bit at trying to get more teamwork into the game.

So try it out, or if you have already, what do you think?

My bad. I missed a step. You need to press [ESC] first to join or create the squad, then once you're squad leader, you press [X] to bring up the map and assign the waypoint. I've edited the instructions above. Thanks for catching that. :)

Me and my clan mates tried it and found it lacking, no tactical advantage of being in a squad, and the rounds are too short to even bother joining/creating them. As you said it's some kind of start, maybe it will be improved overtime or just totally forgotten.

^ That's kind of what I was expecting, at least at first until more people get used to it, and start using it.

One useful thing I could see is for clans who have good communication...instead of trying to describe over Vent/TS: "There's a guy over there on the left side of the burned out building by the trains..." the long way, if the squad leader was the spotter, he could just put the blue marker where the enemy is...guys could start heading over there to eliminate the enemy while he was describing what he saw. A bit faster, and a bit more accurate, maybe.

Yeah, I haven't tried to use a marker didn't know there is one. I will give it a shot, but It will probably be most useful in S&D.

Sort of disappointed with add friends option, they still have to esc and go to the squad menu to join the squad.

Did you know about the "source" filter for "friends" on the server browser? It's pretty neat, much easier then connecting to people through xfire, or asking them on ventrilo. Still the friends list could be improved if the server invite was a pop window on your menu screen.

I saw it, but haven't had a chance to play around with it yet. Cool, I was wondering what it would do, and looking at the regular "add friends" list, I was wondering how to join them in games, other than getting an invite. Makes more sense now.

Im glad you posted HOW to do it. I couldnt figure it out. I ran across it when the server was empty and could never find it again.

Is there an option for people to join an existing squad? That would help a lot.

Yes, you just have to hit esc and join a squad I don't know if there is a limit to how many people can there be in a squad.

Been using it a lot, just having squadmates names in blue is good enough for me.

                        Re: Squad Features

The squad stuff came in a bit handy last night.

I invited a guy I knew from the old IW.com forums to join a game in-progress, and when he got in, he created a squad and I joined it. We were playing CTF on the Makin map. Our playing styles are a bit different - he mostly protects the flag, and I tend to roam around to clear enemies in the middle of the map, and/or capture their flag.

So, one thing is that when you can see the other guy in blue on your map, you know when he's with you as your wingman. The other is that while he was protecting our flag, he played "spotter" with a scoped rifle...because my name was in blue, he could easily see me moving around in front of him, and was able to warn me several times of enemies in front of me that I couldn't see yet. Also, when you're in a squad, you seem to always spectate your squad-mates while you're waiting to respawn, so you get to see some cool kills or whatever that they're doing.

If we had similar playing styles, I'd imagine it would be even more effective with us both roaming around the map working in-tandem. We never even had a chance to use the "waypoint" markers.

I can start to see more uses for this feature. Again, not BF2 caliber, but it'll still be useful.

                          Re: Squad Features

It'll be extremely useful for BFE, we've been playing around and using it on our Euro Public server... it brings more tactics to pub play which is always a great bonus... it does lack some things that BF2 had, e.g. squad chat, ability to rename groups etc.

Couldn't get the spawn on leader thing working, not sure if it's enabled in the beta though, haven't looked into the gsc scripts yet to see if it is...

Are you certain that spawning on the squad leader is a feature of the system? I don't think I remember reading about it (or if I did, I forgot :|: ).

Oh I just assumed it was... since that's how BF2 used it...

The spawns in the beta are a little messed up right now, people spawn infront of you (enemies) instead of far away... :/
