    Rifle Complaints

So, the Console people have been complaining about bolt-action rifles for a couple weeks, and I see some PC folks are also not really happy about them in their current state.

One of the Treyarch devs (David V - Game Design Director) posted this on the cod.com forums about 6 days ago. I think it's likely that these changes have not yet made it into PC either, but may show up in the full version/patch...

    (Non-scoped) Bolt Action Tuning -Update

Upon further reflection, and some testing, I now believe the Bolt Action Rifles should be a 1-hit kill to the UPPER and LOWER torso as long as you have Stopping Power.

What I noticed during the playtesting of the latest update today, was that the opponent is obviously holding his gun in front of him a lot of the time. Exceptions include Sprinting and a brief moment of the player idle animation.

Thus, a lot of shots that I thought should of been one-hit kills to the chest with the revised tuning, were actually shots to the hands and arms. This is probably happening to you guys more often than you realize it.

It's reasonably difficult to hit someone in the upper and lower torso, as the hands and arms are in some ways, a type of shield.

I am not sure when I can get these changes into the game; but they will make it in eventually. Perhaps as early as the first title update.

If these changes end up not working because it makes the bolt actions too powerful or not powerful enough, I will revisit this topic again.
So take that as an FYI...it does look like they may be planning on upping the damage on the rifles to both upper & lower torso, in order to off-set the arms/etc getting in the way of body shots.

For those of you who have tried out the rifles a fair bit already, feel free to give your thoughts on this.

I don't know about lower torso, but they definately should be a 1 hit kill in the upper.

Sounds reasonable, especially with the maps being so close quarters, the Bolt action rifles do need some edge.

Just as an added note, after playing Red Orchestra for the first time, i believe that all bolt action rifles should be one click to shoot, then one click to pull the bolt and load a new bullet. It feels so much more realistic with out needing too much of a learning curve.

RO is just plain awesome, Hopefully they will talk about the next one on UT3.

As far as bolts go, I personally would not like to see them dominate the map as much as they did in previous titles. However, using at this time in the beta is a bit fruitless as they do so little damage. 1 hit upper torso sounds ok, I just am cautious that it will turn into a much more 'campy' game than it is now.

              Re: Rifle Complaints

I like the idea for upper and lower torso. Personally, right now I feel forced to use a bolt with a scope - otherwise I end up needing 2 shots to consistently down a target (using the Mosin Nagant), and even with a scope it sometimes takes 2 shots even when I hit them in the torso.
I'm perfectly OK with having arm/legs/etc. not be one shot kills, but at this rate, I feel that it would be a great benefit to the game (in general, not just me) to have the rifles kill upper/lower torso.

              Replying to the dev:

Ok, say that's the logic. Well... the bullet also goes through the arms, thus inflicting even further damage, so that logic is faulty. If I can get a double (even triple) kill in this game with properly alligned targets (already had a few double headshots) how can my opponents' arms act as a shield?

I understand what you are saying there and i hadnt actually thought of that. If a bullet can penetrate two peoples heads giving a kill, them one stray arm isnt going to stop the bullet ripping a hole in your chest.

Sounds good to me. 1 shot 1 kill with stopping power to upper and lower torso?

                    Perfect.
