Put it this way. EA and DICE want to make money. They'll release some information as soon as they think it will be profitable. This is basically as soon as they can get a rough release period, some media such as a teaser video, some screenshots or something.

Chances are that if they announced it right this very minute, not even they would be able to tell you all about the game.

Just be patient. It's pretty much been confirmed that something along the lines of a "BF3" is in the works, and they won't just abandon it.

Pre-orders will be available the day after the patch :p. That is obviously why they are giving us one. If they weren't interested in continuing the true BF franchise (I'm excluding BFH), then they wouldn't have invested all the money necessary to make the patch.
