    Re: Clan website

To tell you I made a website:http://www.freewebs.com/mattjoey/ But yet I see it has its own domain URL name! I tried changing it and yet it said I have to pay to change it! Like WTH? Just to change the URL name I have to pay at least $20 a month!?!
I told you already I don't have Pay Pal, VISA, MasterCard, nor Air Miles to spend! How can I change it?

PS: I'm not demanding I'm wondering how can I fix this!

No, if you read the invisionfree forums you can redirect the portal and make it look like a main page, put link buttons under the banner. I had it that when you went to my portal you had to columns on either side and a large one in the middle, giving you information on members, clan matches, donation ect. Does help if you know a bit about html.

            MattJoey,

Domain registration (which makes your website into the form "example.com") costs money. You're never going to find it free. Stop asking how to get it for free, because you can't.

Reliable, customizable hosting also isn't free. If you want to install your own content management system and forums and use them advertisement free at your own free will, you will have to pay.

If you absolutely cannot afford it, or have no means to pay for it, you're just going to have to go with something like invisionfree.com or forumer.com. That's just how it is. Your expectations are way, way, way too high if you expect to get a website hosted and in the form of "yourname.com" for free.

EPIC lol @ thread. If there is one thing I know as a webmaster/designer, its how to get a website up for free

Want free hosting? It has some banner ads that get stuck onto the bottom of the page, but you get ample amount of storage space (300MB), bandwidth (10GB) & supports 2 MySQL Databases (last time I checked). Server comes complete with PHP integration as well!
              http://www.freezoka.com/
If you think that the storage is too low, host your images on http://imageshack.us/, upload your files to http://megaupload.com/ and use http://tinyurl.com/ to clean up your code.

Want a domain? You can't get anything fancy like "myclanrox.com" or "myclanrox.org", but you CAN get a loverly (and simple) "myclanrox.co.nr"! Absolutely free! http://www.freedomain.co.nr/

Need forum software, free and legal? The best the internet has to offer: http://www.simplemachines.org/. My old clan used it, my old guild used it, my old alliance used it. Its not ugly, it functions and is open source (sortof). Best of all, its free

This post will only tell you how to get the RESOURCES you need for free, it is still up to you to learn how to make a website If you know NOTHING about XHTML/PHP/etc, check out the tutorials over at http://www.w3schools.com/. INVALUABLE!

                Re: Clan website

                Hey SK|MattJoey,

It's cool to set up a fansite. I have one myself, which has cost nothing but takes a lot of time. I've been putting mine together for about 1 year now. I just slowly add subjects, pages, and different items. The project is mostly about developing skills and having fun.

I currently host with freehostia.com (it's free and bannerless, 250mb of disk space, 5gm transfer). The service has been fairly good, with some downtime, but it is FREE.

It does limit my individual file upload size to 200k which is very small, but has plenty of storage otherwise. There are also helpful PHP tools at freehostia which you can get access to for generating forms and for the forum stuff. It only gives you one MYSQL DB so you have to be creative to run forms and a forum (but it can be done).

I use KOMPOZER for the HTML editing. It's a good free editor and great for beginners. Very intuitive.

I use Fliiby to store the video files and embed them on the site. This allows me to bypass the 200k limits. Fliiby is pretty good. You can use FRAPS for making your own videos, but have to deal with the FRAPs at the top as well as the time limits if you don't pay. I've tried others, but they do not work very well. Windows Movie Maker is enough for most of your needs.

Audio can be managed with Audacity.

IFRAN has been good enough for most of my image editing needs. Image Mapper 1.0 also allows you to create easy image maps.

For the Forum software, like Fingulfin, I would go with SMF. It was very easy to set up. I modified the theme to a Battlefield 2142 theme. Takes time, but you can speed the process along with the free 2142 gfx.

Most of the flash software I found was not suitable for my needs because of the 200K limit and because free flash players tended to contained bannerware. Was not happy that it tried to contaminate my website, so I would avoid flash. I did find one which was suitable for small flash applications and clean, but it added nothing to the site so I gave up on it.

Where to find free 2142 gfx? Here's a helpful site:

Simple programming of embedded games and what not can be done using MIT's Scratch program. (Target audience is children with no programming skills, so its really good).

Anyway, good luck and make sure you have fun.
