A Look Back And When To Pack It In

Its been a long time since I've played POE let alone visit the website. The reason I stopped playing POE2 was because I became increasingly frustrated by one gun which was pissing me off. The Vipr. I remember people killing me from a mile away with an assault rifle which should of been delegated to a sniper rifle. There were times when I would use the heavy assault weapon from the prone position and someone with the Vipr would either one shot kill me, or they would run and gun, then kill me even though I'm pumping them full of lead. How is it that a heavy weapons gun could be so weak against an assault rifle.

I digress. I have not played the mod in well over a year or two and I am wondering what has changed since then? Based on what I have seen, there are still only a handful of players who play the mod on a regular basis along with an even smaller amount of servers available. The Tactical Gamers server used to be one of the only servers to play on alongside Rubber Ducky I believe. Looks like TG is still around, so that is good.

I saw a number of good points brought up in a few other threads with regards to the number of players and POE2. Since BF2 is now three years old, 2142 is steadily maturing, and BF2 has a locked down ranking system, it has never looked good for POE2 or any mod for that matter.

I remember playing POE1 on the BFV engine every night with my clan as it was so much fun, very addicting. The tank battles were simply awesome. At the time, I believe POE was everything people wanted in a Battlefield game and I truly believe the success of POE1 played into EA creating BF2 as modern combat. Too bad they did a horrible job.

Now, I realize it took you guys forever to release the first version of POE2 which to be honest, didn't help matters much but when it was finally released, boy was the mod community buzzing. Tons of people downloading, playing the mod. Too bad the momentum couldn't sustain itself. I don't think this is primarily the POE teams fault as there are so many things that are out of your control. Namely the ranking system but in my opinion, the biggest pain in the *** the team had to deal with was the shoddy BF2 engine.

Now, I haven't read every forum post and I haven't read every POE site post, but I am wondering if the team or a representative of the team ever laid out the facts in why mods for BF2 fail despite them being revolutionary. The last time I was here, the POE team continuously praised EA for releasing such a quality product while also providing them the opportunity to create their mod. Then, after POE2 was released, the bugs forum started to light up and how many times was this explanation used, "This is a bug within the BF2 engine that is not related to POE2. The only way to fix it is to have EA create a patch and then release it to the public". That is some stellar product they released.

I've been a major fan of the Battlefield Series since I stumbled across it with Battlefield 1942. Then came along Desert Combat which was a pinnacle of a mod. Then, there was Battlefield Vietnam with the godly like kit of the M60/LAW. This kit truly defined "I FOUGHT THE LAW AND THE... LAW WON". One thing EA never did fix in that series was the Phantoms missals going towards team vehicles. But then, POE1 came along and once again, another Pinnacle mod. Along comes BF2 and patch after patch creates nothing but new disasters. It was like this patch would fix this bug but introduce 2 new bugs. What a disaster.

I guess the point I'm trying to make here is this, has the POE2 team grown a pair and actually discussed with members close to EA with regards to why modding has become a disaster in BF2? Is this still a fruitless discussion since BF2142 has already been released? I know you guys just released 2.5 but I'm wondering, how much does it suck to put so much work into a product that never sees mass adoption. On top of that, it doesn't reach mass adoption because of things you can not control (rank system, engine bugs).

Am I just a lonely fool yelling into the wind or has anything I typed above have any merit? How much longer will the POE2 team continue to bust their asses for little return? I hope you guys don't give up but really, with the limitations BF2 has provided you with no way around them, what is a modding team such as POE2 to do? Continue on and hope for the best? What if this is the best?

The latest version is cool. Especially single player if you can't find a server! :salute:
