    2142 Titans from a BF2 perspective

I'm posting this here because it belongs here, please don't move it; this forum is a choice demographic.

When I first read the announcement of titan mode, this is what I had in mind:

*Two giant airships with no ground or at least no bases on the ground.

    *No forcefields.

    *Large internal titan structure.

*Mounted weapons all over the titans.

*Smaller airships for transport to the enemy titan.

    *NO FORCEFIELDS

*C4 as a standard kit item.

*The ability to destroy a titan with brute force attacks.

    *NO ****ING FORCEFIELDS!!!

When I thought about it like this, it sounded like a lot of fun. Two teams trying to destroy each other's base. I thought I could just sneak in, kill anyone in my way and blow the titan single-handed due to the incompetence of the enemy. Instead I got 2142 titan mode, which is just glorified conquest.

I even tried to crash the titans into each other and I couldn't even do that. Then when the shields were finally down I didn't even have any C4 to blow it up with. When you balance a game to the point where idiots have the same chance at winning as intelligent people you might as well have just made a coin-flipping game.

I assume this game was made to lure the younger crowd away from BF2 and on to new profits, but I thought people liked to have fun while playing games...

    Thoughts? Comments? Questions? Thanks.

I bet thats the only 'decent' answer your going to get. Your asking a bunch of horny sexy BF2's about something other than BF2. They are either going to rage about bugs, soloing and hackers and totally derail this thread or rage over 2142.

        :awes

Crashing Titans would be pretty funny.

You can take out a titan single handed, if you have the right unlocks (rdx shotgun) and the other team are not defending well.....seriously, it's happened like twice in 1000 rounds!
If there is 2 of you (support and recon), it's a lot quicker & easier!

I dont see what is wrong with titan gamemode as a whole, its nice they did something different. While i agree they combat should be centred more around fighting in the titan it think it works fine as it is (apart from the lag)

No bases would work if DICE implemented the airdropping of vehicles from the titan (like they said), but that would probably be too much for them to handle. :|:

Smaller airships, can you get smaller than the transport helo/jets? Unless you wanted pods with rocket boosters attached, I don't see that happening.

To be honest, I've only played the demo; that's why I'm asking BF2 players about this. I'm just trying to convey what I envisioned titan mode would be like. I guess I just thought it would be more grandiose.

I think the force-fields are the worst part; there are places on the titan that are always protected by shields. One of the best things about BF2 is the ability to steal enemy aircraft, but it's practically impossible to steal aircraft from a titan.

Titan mode is a conquest/objective hybrid, and I guess what I'm really getting at is that I want a pure 'objective' game-mode.

In BF2 the spec ops class is classified as "an elite soldier specializing in stealth and sabotage", but it seems to me that 2142 is moving in the opposite direction. See, I'm the Chinese soldier standing behind you on the carrier holding e, trying to steal your jet before you notice me. I'm the guy who parks the J10 on the carrier with the windshield covered in C4 so that the poor fool has the chance to think "Oh sh¡t" just before I blast him. These are the things that make BF2 fun for me, but I found these rogue-like tactics somehow absent from 2142.

I did however, find out that you can ride a supply crate down the enemy shields, but it's not easy or useful.

Anyway thanks for reading my rant.

The thing is that the other 63 players on the servers just thought you were a ******* that ruins the server balance. Sure you help your team win if the enemy doesn't get a jet, but it's not fun for the enemy to get raped the rest of the entire round without having a chance to fight back (with BF2s poor AA)

                  Wow, lol.

But yeah, titan mode could have been so much cooler than it actually is. I think it's mostly due to engine limitations. 2142 on Frostbite, yumm.

Well the thing is that when I steal the F35, I'm scared sh¡tless of the other one; It's a lot harder for an F35 to avoid another F35 than it is to avoid a J10 (at least for me) because the other F35 can match every move I make while the J10 doesn't seem to turn as well at higher altitudes.

It really is down to engine limitations, balance and keeping it a Battlefield game.

It wouldn't have been in the developers priorities at ALL to make it easy for one player to single handedly destroy the enemy titan and win the game. Battlefield games are largely teamwork focused and Titan mode does help bring that out. If you can get yourself a good squad or a group of your clan it can be very fun organising what silos you are going to cap, loading apcs and tank columns and move across the map, then changing your plans once the enemy sheilds are down, taking a loaded apc or air transport to the enemy titan and resupply and assist each other in destroying the consoles and core.

It's a shame though that it doesn't happen too often. Titan could be vastly improved but only with a very new engine.

During beta testing 2142 the titans lagged like hell, so its definately engine limitations. Just having them move at all was causing huge problems. BF2 engine doesnt like big vehicles especially if you try to move them. Thats why the carriers in BF2 dont move at all.

Frankly, I think the Titan mode is one of the best things of 2142. I love the coordination (if your team actually has any ) of fighting on two major fronts, and having to juggle between offense and defense depending what the enemy's doing, and what your own strengths and weaknesses are.
Plus the maps (and the conquest versions of them) are to me, the better ones in 2142, kind of reminiscent of BF2. The standard infantry maps are too claustrophobic and uni-directional for my tastes. Sometimes you can't even physically flank an enemy CP because of their size and shape. I used to think Karkand was too much of a choke point. HA! Camp G makes Karkand look like Shuia Tabia.

'Combat' inside the Titan is just one giant cluster****. Narrow corridors are far too easy to defend using nadespam, PK rocket spam, APMs, and RDX, considering you know exactly where the enemy will have to go if he wants to take your console. Sure, a dedicated squad can take out a lone defender, but if you have 3 people defending the same corridor and they're good at timing their hand grenade spam, it's impossible for the attacking team to bust through. If people were forced to use their guns (engineer AV weapons as well, of course), Titan combat would have been a helluva lot more fun, kind of like it is in the BF2142 intro movie. Instead it's just the worst example of spam in a BF game to date. Therefore, if it weren't for the silos, which as Chael mentioned make it pretty much a glorified conquest mode, the match could theoretically last forever until the defenders of one of the two Titans finally just say '**** it' and let the attackers in just so the round will end. Until there's something better designed than BF2142's Titan mode, I'm glad they haven't yet forced an objective-only type gameplay.
