I had that same issue for some time, and for me it was because I was running peer guardian 2 and daemon tools in the background. Not sure if your running these but some apps it just does not like. Try killing all your unnecessary applications you have running and start up bf2.

You can also try this:

1. Go to my computer/program files/eagames/battlefield2/pb.

2.Now that you have that open download this http://www.evenbalance.com/downloads/pbweb.exe

3. Put that program into your PB folder that you have open.

4. Now be sure that you have BF2 closed before you try this because for some reason people seem to have it open. Run this program. It won't work unless it's in your PB folder with all the stuff in it so be sure it's in there. It's going to take about 5 min so follow the instructions. Dont cut it short.

5. Now that that is done running put this link in http://evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsetup.php

6. Download the zip file you see down there and put that program into your PB folder

7. Run it and on the add games tab find battlefield 2 and add it.

8. Press Check for updates.

9. once that is done everything should work properly and now just play.

This is also the link for a diagnostic test thing it does that seems to make it work.

it's called PBSVC. After you check for updates run this diagnostic test that makes sure your punkbuster system is communicating with your computer properly.

Peerguardian is a bad thing to run whilst gaming.

Turn it off unless you are downloading.

I just tried ALLiED's tip and it didn't work out. Just the same problem once again. Does anybody have any other tips?

i had this issue and i think i solved it. i downloaded the pb updater app and i manually added my games that use PB and it updated the files. before that i tried going to the site and manually downloading the pb htm files but that wasn't good enough. try the updater app. however i'm not sure if it totally solved the problem, i only played a few rounds after that. i've gone back to BF2142 and haven't played BF2 since.

I have the same problem, but only a temporary fix.

After you get kicked with bunkpusterB handshaking failed, exit BF2, start the task manager, and end the bunkpusterA process. Restart BF2 and you're set. You'll likely have to do it again if you switch servers though, so find a good one first.

Well sounds like you have tried everything, but if it was me this is what I would do:
Delete the contents of the pb folder in EA Games/Battlefield 2/pb.
Download pbsvc and run the uninstall first.
Install pbsvc.
Run pbsetup.
Reboot the computer.

From EA:

Vista users need to start the game explicitly with admin rights.

Please make sure you allow the service files in security software like virus scanners and/or firewalls. You will need to allow/unblock the services PnkBstrA.exe and PnkBstrB.exe from your "C:\Windows\system32\" folder (or "C:\Windows\SysWOW64\" on 64bit systems). In case of doubt, manually add both to your firewall's allow list. After the installation process you will only find PnkBstrA, so just make sure this process file is not blocked. Then try playing on a PB enabled server, in case of a kick"
