when i download a new map and place it into the levels folder and run the game, all it does is crash to desktop. why? what can i do about it?

make sure the map is not inside of another sub folder named by that map name,also check to see if the map was modified

Make sure the map is designed for that mod and if you're trying single-player or co-op make sure the map supports it (many do not).
