Router Issues

Hi i have a Netgear WRG614 (V6 i think) and i have had no trouble with it until recently.

my mums boyfriend recently got a new laptop a compaq one im not sure of the model but it has windows vista home installed and here is my problem.

with his old laptop we could both connect to the router at the same time no problem i would game while he would surf ebay (thats all the sad b@stard does lol) but upon getting this new lapto i have a serious problem:
as soon as the new laptop is turned on i temporarily lose connection, i mean totally; team speak, any game i may be on, xfire and my browsers freeze up.

now it wouldn't be so bad if this was all that happened but once i regain connection as long as the laptop is on it periodically repeats itself every few minutes.

this is totally destroying my online activities as at the level at which i play doesn't allow for such neusances and given the nobheaded attitude of my family (that i shouldn't be on the computer, ever as it doesn't make money (fecking technophobes)) i can't simply ask them to stay off it for a while

any insight would be much appreciated :)

Have you tried setting static IPs for your rig. You could give the laptop one too. Also what kind of network card are you using? - b or g. If the laptop and your system use g then set your router to use G exclusively.

Well hold on tight.............

I had problems when I used to let DHCP connect my router. Now I set an address in the router setup and assign the same settings to the network card.

If you go to your router setup there should be something about assigning a static IP. In there you should see an entry for your computer. Maybe listed under your computer name or your network cards MAC address. There should be something about IP ranges. Maybe something along the lines of 192.168.1.100 -192.168.1.199. Use ther first number available. Then in windows, deselect DHCP, go to your network cards IP settings and apply the same number. Enter the same IP address. Subnet mask should fill in itself. Gateway will be the first three numbers and then 1, example 192.168.1.1

Oh you'll need to enter the DNS lookup address too. This should be listed somewhere in your router setup.

hmm im looking in my routers set up now and i see a few things that look right but i am afraid to touch anything incase i bollox it .... you have xfire/msn?

Nope, afraid not.

Just familiarise yourself with the various settings before you change anything but it's quite straightforward really. What your trying to acheive is telling your various bits which IP to use rather than them working it out for themselves. If you have access to the laptop, test it on that first and if it doesn't work just change what you changed back.

What system are you? XP or Vista. I'm a bit rusty with XP

and no i don't have acces to the laptop he does his nut if anyone elses touches it :/

also on a side note i;'m not sure but if i remember when he 1st got it it was ok but one day he dropped it and since then it has been doing this... may just be a coincidence but im not sure i don't remember exactly ...

I guess the laptop could be faulty and this DHCP thing may not be your issue. That would be my first guess though. I posted a link in my previous post that may interest you.

anyways, yeah try to assign IP numbers, you also need to do it under windows for your machine. try everything, even try to put your PC on dmz.

btw sorry for the hijack but how do you make a network via a router. i have one and it says connected. i can surf on the internet but there is no network:S. oh i get internet via network connection.

If your internet connection is plugged into your router, you are connected to the router and you have internet then you have a network. If you connect another computer to the router then you will be able to share files thus you will have a peer to peer network.

What are you wanting to acheive?
