help with high ping problems

My friend has a laptop that is more then capable of playing this game, hes able to play alot of mmo's with no problems but he is unable to play TF2 and bf2142 cause of high pings.

he has a interent connection giving him 4k+ download speed and 1k+ upload speed from http://speakeasy.net/speedtest/ and only uses the windows firewall.

any ideas would be great

Is he wireless or plugged in? What system is he running, Vista or XP? What is he pinging to the servers? Is it all servers? We need a little more information to try and help.

when hes loading the map its anywhere from 50-90. As he gets int he game it spikes from 200-highs of 900 until the server kicks him

Using windows xp and his laptop is plugged in.

That sounds like something else is eating your bandwidth or maybe your wireless signal is being corrupted.

What is your wireless signal strength like. Could there be something near that could cause interference. Like a mobile phone or a microwave oven.

Is anyone else sharing the internet connection. Has he shut down everything else that could be connecting to the net unawares on the laptop and any other PC that is sharing the connection. I'm talking P2P, your sister running MSN, someone else browsing the net?

He normally has 1 pc on the internet besides his laptop, but its completely idle (not surfing the net or anything.). His laptop is wired so theres no wireless signal, hes able to play WoW, EQ2 and the halo trial (he gets a 20 ping in ventrilo), but when he trys to play TF2 or bf2142 with me his pings go sky high.

im going to get him some server IP's and have him put those into command prompt and see what the pings are.

If he regularly has no problems playing other games then it may be a punkbuster problem.

Try manually updating punkbuster.
