Black spots

I did a search for this and there were several topics on it, but the latest was from 2007 and rather than revive an old topic, I figured starting a new one would be best for me.

I have had a recent problem where black spots appear in the terrain. They flash as I move. This happens in vBF2 and in all mods.

I've performed the following steps:

• Cleared my cache
• Updated my video drivers
• Changed my graphics settings to lower and tried turning off dynamic lighting
• Reinstalled the game
• Blew all dust out of my case
• Disabled all overclocking
• Ensured all my fans are working properly
• Ensured all temps are low

I think this is BF2 specific because I have noticed NO problems with any other game that I play, only BF2, so it leads me to believe it's not overheating or artifacting.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Sounds like your video card is just about to kick the bucket.

Obviously since the problem is only in BF2 and not in any other game or process, I seriously doubt that my 9 month old video card is going south.

Are the black spots you are seeing mainly with grass and sand terrain? Do you have a Nvidia 8800 based video card?

I had a similar problem on my computer when I upgraded to an 8800 GTS card. I was seeing black spots that flashed as i moved. I did not notice them too much on city terrain but grass and sand was bad.

Battlefield 2 was the only game I had issues with. I tried many things and I am not sure which one it was the finally fixed the problem. I am pretty sure it was video driver related. I updated by video driver (currently running 6.14.11.6921) and reinstalled the game.

I tried something I saw on the net. I dont see how it makes a difference but I do it now myself. I always start the game useing the link under Start, All Programs, EA Games, etc. I no longer use the start link that pops up when the disk is inserted. I found a bunch of folks who swore this fixed there issue.

My money is on the video driver as the real fix. Either way, I have been spot free for a few months now. Good luck.

It turns out it really WAS overheating. Although no other games or applications were affected, apparently BF2 is extra sensative to overheating. I shut my computer down for a few hours while I was out and when I came back, the black spots were gone. BTW, I don't have an 8800 GTS card.
