    hmm decisions decisions

ok after i get paid on friday minus rent and bills i will have roughly $1800 (american) to play with..

if i want to get a really high quality rig that will dominate this game and be able to play future games really well for a few years should i wait until i have more money?

ok i already have a monitor, mouse, keyboard and sound system so i need to buy a tower, hard drive, (a GOOOD) processor, mobo, video card and 4GB ram and then i think i need to buy the os probably Vista 64 bit so i can have
4GB RAM, then probably some kind of extra cooling so a couple fans caus i might want to overclock or i dont know how much water cooling would cost or if its worth it. then if im building also a CDROM drive? yeah i think

    hmm what else....

uhh what do you guys think..?

i think i'm a little jealous. that's what i think:P a good mobo that supports ddr2. ddr3 isn't worth the extra money. you should probably stick w/ an intel core 2 duo. bf2142 won't even make full use of quad cores. later when prices are dropping even lower, you can upgrade to a quad core & get additional vid card for 2 or 3 way sli.

just a few options off newegg

    antec 900 case $120
ocz game extreme 850 psu (80% efficiency, SLI cert) $180 w/ $40 rebate
    intel core 2 duo e8400 (3.0 ghz, 45nm) $175
msi p7n diamond mobo (780i chipset, 3way SLI, onboard sounblaster xfi sound) $250
western digital veliciraptor (300 gb, 10k rpm, 3gb sata) $290
    asus geforce gtx 260 896 mb $300 w/ $30 rebate
    4 gb ocz reaper ddr2 800 mhz $98 w/ $35 rebate
    windows vista ultimate 64 $180

    that's $1598 or $1489 w/ the rebates (before taxes)
take your pick on any dvd burner for about $30-$35

ok i am seeing what you are posting here it looks good the hard drive looks a bit large for my taste like i dont need 300GB and then i have grown a processor fetish and hating my pentium D 805 makes me want to get something very meaty.

i was looking on newegg too the only thing i tend to worry about since im a bit nooby with comp hardware is whether everything is compatible with one another. i have this so far on top of what you suggest

some other person suggested this but it seems a tad expensive..

well the thing about the cpu is you're going to spend double the money & won't see double the gaming performance. you can always upgrade to the quad core when more games actually utilize it & the price is much lower. as far as the h/d, the (retail) velociraptors only come in 300 gb. you should look at some form of a 10,000 rpm drive though. i was able to acquire one & LOVE it. the 8800 gts g92 is a nice card you won't be disappointed there or w/ that mobo. now the ram is what i have in my pc now & i've got no complaints whatsoever. but i run ultimate 64 & it recognizes all 4 gb. just be sure that the vista home 64 recognizes all 4gb. it's either home or any 32 bit version of windows that's limited to recognizing & using only 3 gb of ram, regardless of how much you have in your pc. the cooler & psu are looking pretty good too. but you said wanting to have lots of cooling. the antec 900 is a mesh metal w/ 2 120mm fans in front that blow straight on the h/d's. it's got a rear 120mm exhaust fan & a 200mm exhaust fan on top. plus both the side & the inside has a set up to mount 2 more 120 mm fans. real good air flow on this unit. i have it now & hands down the best case i've ever had. my tower is in a bad spot & was ALWAYS hot. now, it only blows out cool air, just soooo much better. anyways, that's my 2 cents. take or leave it, but i hope it helps somewhat.

If I was you I would go for a quad core - If you have 1800 dollars to spend then you may as well. 2142 won't use three of the cores but it's a false economy to get a dual with the intention of getting a quad later. The core duos/quads overclock like champs so get the entryish level quad. You shouldn't have to clock it for a year or two anyhow.

            4gb of DDR2 1066.

A geforce gtx 260 for a bit of future proofing.

A mobo that supports PCIe 2.0, DDR2 1066 memory and socket 775 for the core quad processor of your choosing.

I had a raptor and didn't really notice an improvement in speed. Plus it sounded like I had a two stroke petrol engine inside my rig but if you're not fussed about masses of space you could go for the 150 gig one.

Water cooling is only needed if you want a very quiet system. My advice - just get some good quality after-market coolers for your CPU and GFX card.

Case of your choice. Coolermaster make some good quiet cases.

Get 32bit Vista for starters. This game doesn't run on 64bit.
Liquid cooling if you can afford it, the system is not expensive but it adds up as you have to buy fluid for it.
Quad Core if you can indefinitely, that will really help with future games as the Quad is way ahead of its time in gaming.
Buy an nViDia 8800 GTX with 1gb of memory, or any 8800 with 1gb is good. They're usually 200-250 dollars on www.tigerdirect.com Unless you want something with a little more bang, one of those will give you great quality though a little old but still great cards.

For cases, everyone has their own favorite. I would recommend Xion they make extremely nice cases.

                Re: hmm decisions decisions

I'm sure there are people on this forum who run on 64 bit Vista and if you're gonna get 4gb of memory then 64 is the way to go. Overkill for 2142 but good for the future.

Don't bother with an 8xxxx series Geforce. If you have $1,800 then get at least a 9800, you may as well get the Geforce GTX 260. Just looked at that Tigerdirect place and it is selling for $330 bucks. Very high performance at a decent price and has Physx processing on board which will also be good for future games. Now that Nvidia has enabled Physx processing on it's later GFX cards I expect more games in the future to take advantage.

quad cores perform no better than dual cores in games. for gaming purposes, the same money gets you more performance out of a dual core.

Yes I agree. Scrub what I said earlier. At the present time it's likely better to get a dual core with the highest clock speed for your budget.
