How does 64 bit sound?

Well Im new here to these forums but this looked like a great place to have my questions answered, so I joined. Also, please excuse me if this is the wrong place to be asking questions such as these. If it is, I ask that the thread be moved accordingly.

Okay, so half of my computer is out of town right now for RMA repairs and will be back in a few weeks. Since I shipped it I fell in love with XP 64 bit, though I have not yet been able to play games on it. This arises two questions for me.

The first being, are there any known compatibility issues with BF2 and XP x64?

The second being a little more complicated. So I have my own dedicated server here at home. It also uses XP 64 bit and I have mainly been running COD4 server apps off of it. I am wondering if BF2 has a 64bit server app or if I am limited to using the win32 version. Keep in mind that XP x64 is based on the windows server 2003 platform.

XP64 is horrible. Awful driver support.

If you want a 64bit OS, you need Vista.

Drivers for what? General Hardware? IDC about that, I have all the drivers I need for my hardware and IMO I despise Vista with a passion. I refuse to use it, ever.

You don't have to start a flame war, we could just have an adult discussion. Many of the early problems surrounding Vista are fixed by the new service pack, so i'm just interested to see what you think.

A lot of people say "I hate Vista", simply because it's cool to hate.

Well, how about just running bf2 on xp x64?

Should in theory work, but, with BF2 and Xp64 the way they are, it could go wrong :|:

Well, as far as vista goes I have never been satisfied with performance. I used service pack 3 on XP pro 32bit and it smoked service pack 1 on vista 32 bit. Vista seems to be alot more taxing on the hardware and IMO the extra tax is coming from un-needed bloat. Personally I have found vista to be more annoying than XP when trying to do simple tasks. I have used every version of Vista to date and I still prefer XP over any of them. Vista does in fact look fantastic but that doesnt suit my needs for a personal computer. I am all business in that aspect. I am a hardened overclocker and I am always looking for more performance. I slim down my own versions of XP and tweak little bits and peices then compile my own ISOs so I can reinstall windows preset for different purposes. I simply found vista to give more un-neccesary features than anything. Of course there are still many other reasons along with that, thats just my main reason of dislike.

Since my new found love for XP 64 bit I have yet to see a faster OS and it required little to no tweaking. The driver support isnt really all that bad for it now and the 32 emulation in it is great. The only 32 bit apps that I have had problems running on XP 64 bit are progs that deal directly with a cmd/dos prompt. A simple download of 32bit dos-box fixed that. Otherwise its runs all my 32 bit stuff very well and seems to be no slower than win32.

I agree Vista is a lot more taxing on hardware, but remember, hardware has increased in terms of performance a lot since XP was released. The only real reasons for upgrading to Vista 64 are looks, security and stability.

Vista is very hard to crash. The way the drivers have been split up means even if a driver crashes, the computer doesn't. It's great, i do a lot of overclocking as well. I recently did a 1.1v BIOS VMOD on my Nvidia 8800gt and even when it's overclocked a bit too far, the computer doesn't crash, it just pops up a sign saying "driver stopped responding, but has been recovered". Then i just dial back the OC.

I like XP and understand people don't like the bloat. But, if you have high end hardware, it can cope with it. A lot of people say it's a memory hog, but this is only because of Superfetch. Unlike XP, Vista uses some of that empty memory to load up your most frequently used programs so that when you open them, they appear much, much quicker. But, turn Superfetch off and you close to the same amount of RAM that XP used.

I've used XP and Vista 64bit, no problems with any Battlefield Games.
I doubt the performance would be any better than 32bit, unless you use more than 3gb of ram.

I agree with you very much, but my personal view is simply put like this?

If you are looking for the most performance and nothing else, even with hardware improvements, XP is the way to go.

Vista is very easily dealt with when any recent hardware is used but it is still a little more taxing and thats what im getting at. I see you are a member of the british overclockers club, so I know you can see my point of view. I as well do alot of really hardcore overclocking. My first homebuilt single stage phase is about complete. =]

As an overclocker, i would never go back to XP. The drivers just mean "on the fly" graphics overclocking is so much quicker and easier.

But, i see your point. There are tools to cut down on Vista though, stripping ones.

I play BF2 all the time on my XP64 bit and the only problem I've had is a lack of itunes support (that was apple's problem, not the OS, and winamp works fine as a replacement anyway).
