Centralizing the gaming market makes it bigger.

However it also increases the costs exponentially.

Sony is touting it's billions in revenues and millions of console sales, but it blatantly ignores commenting about expenditures as if they haven't made a dent in the companies most recent practices. Each console sale is a very large loss in revenue - as each console is sold at a very big loss, for both the retailers and Sony itself.

This aggressive expansion in the market signals a desperate attempt to increase first party game sales and third-party licensing profits. What makes this expansion seem desperate is the fact that they're making such an aggressive expansion in a market that is notorious for pirating console games.

The console market has always been volatile, and with so many contenders - it's expected that one of them is bound to drop out within the next generation.

I predict that Sony will be the one to drop out after it's next console, and will refer to this thread five years from now when I'm right for some well deserved I told you so's.

Microsoft is bigger, and is able to throw more money at third-party developers. Nothing is more evident to this fact than Square-Enix's recent announcement. Without exclusive third-party game releases, what does Sony have that the X-box doesn't?

If you say Blu-ray in a gaming thread, I'm going to smack you.

Their The Sims like gimmick programs may not save them, especially when Animal Crossing and The Sims have already been out for a number of years... The Wii also has many of the same News and Weather programs that Sony recently announced.

Truth be told, I don't think Sony has any real aces up their sleeve at this point. I fear they're just trying to get through this generation without the PS3 going down as the first Playstation that failed to dominate the market...

Well you better book a ticket to Denmark then

IMHO having Blue-Ray on the PS3 won the format war for Sony. That has to be worth some serious $$$

In terms of console sales, Blu-ray might be more important long-term, but right now a lot of consumers don't yet either have HDTV's, or want to spend more money on blu-ray discs. As "regular" DVD's get phased out, then it'll become a bigger factor...however, all Microsoft has to do is switch over to blu-ray as well, either internally or via an add-on. And I'd say movie studios had a much bigger role than the PS3 in winning the "format war".
