    Punkbuster 1.7 problem

    Hi all,

After running the new 1.7 patch I keep getting kicked from various servers, followed by a PB error message that reads something like: "...pnkpstrb.exe handshaking failure"

I have updated PB manually using evenbalance.som, restarted the game etc. but nothing seems to help.

Anyone out there with a similar problem, and even better a solution?

    Thanks in advance!

    Re: Punkbuster 1.7 problem

Whenever I get kicked PB for init failures or something, I just do this in console:

    /pb_ver
    /pb_cl_Enable
    /reconnect

Once back on the server, I do:
    /pb_sv_ver
    /pb_ver

and check my version is same as servers... when I do those commands I don't get kicked again. It's mainly because when you do "pb_ver" it checks your current PB version, and I think 'requests/checks for new version' - thus it 'initialises' PB, if you get an error from doing the command then you have something wrong on your PC with PB. When you do /pb_cl_enable - this makes sure its on. When you do /pb_sv_ver this communicates your PB with the clients PB, so basically its like a 'jump-start kit'

Seems to always work for me... though with other PB errors you may need to load up services and check PB A and PB B are running, or restart the router/PC.

If you are still having issues, download pbsvc.exe from here:

(Don't worry, direct link to Evenbalance site) to test/reinstall your services. This should sort out the problems you are experiencing.

I have now tried this as described.

I may have done it wrong but when I enter /pb_ver in console (by hitting the "½ and §" key, right?) nothing happens at all. Same thing for /pb_cl_Enable.

I have tried this. Even uninstall - restart - reinstall and test (=ok) - restart and test (=ok).

        Nothing however has changed

        Please help

Press ` (button left of 1, also has ¬ and ¦ on the key) - it's called the tilde key. Also make sure console is enabled, you may need to go into Options and enable console.

To bring up 'full console' press SHIFT and ` together - that way you can see if the command works and what output it gives you.

Hi again and thx for the quick reply!

            Console is enabled.

Typing /pb-ver in console (using full console) shows: "(2.078 | A0)"
Typing /reconnect shows "can't reconnect to local host"

I can't enter the /pb_sv_ver command on the server before I'm kicked :dead:

            Any more ideas?

            Br and thx in advance

Wait you said this occured just after you updated... therefore it could be the settings with your firewall... it could be blocking the new punkbuster update, where you'll need to unblock punkbuster in your firewall... (since I generally leave my firefall pretty open, and don't need to play with the settings, I probably won't be of much help, but I can look for help for you)

I have now allowed pnkbstrB through the firewall (again), but is unable to locate pnkbstrA anywhere on the pc, when searching for it.

                Hmmmmmm.

                Any help is greatly appriciated.

PnkBstrA should be in the same place you found PnkBstrB

As I'm on Vista 64bit mine is located:

                  C:\Windows\SysWOW64\

But if you're not on 64bit - try searching:

                  C:\Windows\System32\

Or just run a search inside the C:\Windows folder

I found it in "C:\windows\system32" but the ...handshake failure is still there.

                      Punkbusters own support

                      On punkbuster.com I found this:

It seems to be another one of those "It's a fault caused by some other programs" kind a things :dead:

I have tried diabling both my Antivirus (AVG 8.0) and firewall (windows own), with no improvement

                      Just thought I'd share this....

Hmm, Have your tried reinstalling Punkbuster through Control Panel > Add/Remove Files?

Are you able to find: "PnkBstrK.sys" in your CoD4/pb folder?

Try double clicking on both "PnkBstrA" and "PnkBstrB" found inside the CoD4/pb folder? (it will load like a cmd window for a split second, but PnkBstrA should stay on in the ctrl+alt+del /task manager)

Try join a CoD4 PB Server, then check task manager to see if both "PnkBstrA" and "PnkBstrB" are in the task manager...

Can't think of what else you could try.
