what do you mean when you have FPS running? FRAPS?

FPS can jump around significantly based on what is going on in a map too.

Yeah, I acted like an idiot and built a new machine a while ago after been pissed off by somebody calling me an idiot, and I tell only two parameters in my new rig: 45nm and SLI. Still I have lags. These lags are not due to my computer, but rather from laggy server or package loss. If you have >60 FPS in single, then it's probably server issue. That's the main reason I stopped playing Titan. It usually happens on some Titan, Anzio and Wake 48/64p servers. Try going to low-ping 16/32p CQ servers and see if it still happens. I used to have system lag when I was using P4+7800GT+512MB, but system lag isn't like the kind I've encountered like this.

If you're using Vista, then it's also possible that Vista is doing something in the background that chokes CPU memory bandwidth. This game uses only one core so any background process running some hard drive operation won't hurt performance much, unless mem bus is jammed.

To be honest Vista kernel is actually pretty good, better than XP I would say, but Microsoft screwed up the product by many performance-killing features. Who needs Aero desktop or all the crap on the right side? I would be very happy if it looks like twm with an xterm running when boots up. After so many years since 1984 commercial, Mac OS still looks more or less the same. Steve Jobs does have some better insight than Bill Gates, but that's probably why I hate Apple and love Microsoft. ENVY!

Aero looks good and is turned off automatically when a game is running.

See my post in the "Differing Pings" thread in this section. Lag is not the same as a drop in frames per second (FPS). A drop in FPS cannot be caused by a high Ping. A slow internet connection, or playing on a server very far away (like in Europe, if you're in the U.S.) will cause "lag:" where your PC isn't receiving information as fast as you are sending.

Furthermore, we can't conclude anything until the OP clarifies what is happening.

                To Lackin:
What do you mean by "gaming stopping for a split second?" Do you mean the game freezes or does it become extremely jerky? Also what do you mean "running FPS?" Do you mean using BF2142 in-game show FPS command? Also, when does the FPS drop by 10? When you enter the command?

Unless you sit down and write out a clear, understandable, answer to these questions, I'm afraid we do not have enough information to really know how to help you.

Also, we NEED to know what your system specifications are: processor, video card and RAM, at the very least.

                  Re: Lag !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                  Internet/Server issue:

                  people warping around
                  hit detection
                  connection problems

                  CPU/ GFX issue:

                  framerate
                  stuttering
                  freezing

                  ???? is this somewhat accurate?

i am kind of confused about hit detection though caus a while ago i went from 1GB to 3GB of RAM with a pentium D 805 and i did noticed that the game ran smoother alot of the time but also it seemed like i had better hit detection on average. id say hit detection is probably the most confusing thing to me it seems like a combination of server/internt and CPU all together assuming that you are also actually hitting the target.

but just so i know....the only reason i ever get crappy framerate is because my computer sucks and not because of some internet/server issue that is out of my control. that is good

I didn't say that low ping generates lag, but you know that certain rendering command will not be issued if certain information is not exchanged between the client and the server, hence reduce FPS in certain circumstances. Lost package is most likely cause of the kind of lag and drop in FPS. Lame server machine may also be another culprit. Due to the way how Eithernet works, some people are doomed to have poor package send-out rate. That's generally not the case if you play at home with less than 5 computers connects to your Comcast hub.

Nevertheless, high ping hampers player performance. That's for sure.

You're right that we don't know what exactly is happening, but some hypothesizing isn't doing any harm.

I've tried to run Crysis Demo in a window with Aero on, and all I can say is 2x FPS difference. Why did I do that you may ask? Monitoring CPU/GPU temp.

Don't give advice if you can't even use proper grammar.

I played BF2142 fine on 1GB of RAM, but I was running XP, and made sure I didn't have any extra processes running. (it only takes around 300-400MB of RAM)

jake isnt your computers processor the most important thing? RAM is also important caus i have a Dell 5150 with PentiumD 805 @2.66Ghz and 533Mhz fsb, then a Nvidea 7900GS 256MB and i had 1GB RAM stock and when i plugged in more RAM so i had 3GB the game ran noticably smoother and i had better hit detection. how good your processor is plays a big role right?

Don't talk to me if your a prejudice nob, just because im only glancing through a thread and can't be arsed wasting the time of day to proof read my posts for some daft tw@ like you don't go assuming I'm illiterate. i got a high pass in English and I think you will find I'm quite competent.

                              anyway

Perhaps it did run smoothly on you computer but what kind of ram did you have if you even dare to tell me it was DDR1 then i will come to your house and burn ye. i had 2 512 sticks of DDR1 and a fat *** 3.0Ghz Pentium 4 processor and il chugged like a BIATCH im talking 15 fps on 800x600 all low with no AA/AF here and on titan mode i couldn't even look at the titan my game just died ... i literally had to get buddies on better pc's to airlift me off the titan safely ....

right as i say about 3 gig ram will do u nicely ...also a dual core processor is handy ... you have one?

what you wanna do is go into system manager find 2142.exe (after you have started obviously lol) and right click on it , then go to process affinity and make sure only one of teh boxes is ticked this will set it to run on only 1 core. (this is because teh 2142 engine is not optimised for dual core processors so having the other core trying to run it is just a waste). next go to fraps.exe and set it to the opposite core to the one 2142 is running on. (this will stop the processes interfereing with eachother). finally find 2142 .exe and right click once again , click on process priority (i think im using linux atm so i forget) and set it to real time that will mean this process will get the most system res. possible. now alt tab back into game and try again you will see an increase in overall fps and also smoother play overall .

also in fraps control centre make sure to set the fps capture level at about the max fps u get while recording this will help aswell since if u have it set lower fraps caps ur fps lower

there that "comprehensive" enough for you ?
