computer shuts down after 10-20 seconds

    Hi,

I am having trouble starting up my computer. Every time i startup the computer, it will shut itself down after 10-20 seconds, time varies each startup. There is no message indicating why the computer shuts down. I know there could be a lot of things that can cause this to happen. I'm pretty sure it's not a virus tho. I get to the motherboard screen and before i get to the windows xp loading screen, it gives me a black screen that allows you to pick from normal mode, safe mode, and the mode the computer ran last time if worked. I tried to run in safe mode, but it still shuts down. In BIOS, i looked at my voltage, 3v was around 3.4, the 12v was around 12.2. CPU temp was 41C. I don't know whats wrong, any ideas as why it shuts itself down after a couple of seconds?

    Thanks

edit: as to overheating problems, i can see that all my fans are spinning, and i dont think my computer overheats after just about 10 seconds to shut down.

Is it possible that your CPU heatsink has been separated or unseated from your cpu?

i think that may be possible, since i took my computer to my friend's house before the problem occured, when i get back home, i'll check.

start the computer in safe mode. then go to run and type in msconfig and press enter...

go to the startup tab and deselect any programs that you do not want to start up when windows starts.

i cant say that you will find anything there that is causing the computer to shut down/crash on startup, but thats the first thing id do...

so get into safe mode, you have to restart the computer and tap a button and then a menu comes up and you select "start windows in safe mode" this mode basically only starts up the necessary windows operating system, and doesnt load any extra programs.

i forget what the button is, google it... its something like F8 of F11...

        good luck son!
