ok so i finally decided to buy the game and wanted it asap.it was late in the evening so i just decided to buy it from a direct download website. well ok i chose the game stop sight and downloaded it from them. mid download it crashes on me and never comes back so i get rid of everything i can see of the file i downloaded. i then go and buy a CD copy from gamestop the next day. when i get home from work i put it in install and then i go to patch and it gives me that error that everyone says they get with the wrong version crap. now i have seen that you can just restore ur comp to before you bought it, that would be great but i didnt back up my system and i am stuck i have the hard copy and i want to play online but it wont let me.some1 help me please hell ill even paypal you some cash for some help. well thanks in advance guys

Check your add/remove option in the control panel and see if it was installed. If it is, remove it. Then install it again. That may resolve the issue.

Keep your money and buy yourself something pretty.

i tried that and theres nothing there. however everytime i boot up the download thingy from gamestop comes up so i know its somewere on my rig but i just dont know where. i believe it says the publisher is macrovision or something like that. does that help any?

Try searching registry -> Start > Run > regedit - then search for "cod4"

Backup anything in the registry before you go deleting the cod4 keys

If that program starts up, it can only be in the STARTUP folder or in the registry. You can run MSCONFIG from the run bar and see if it is running from the startup tab. Then just uncheck it.

What you can also try is running CoD4 and there is a button to update it in the game. See if you see that button and can run the update from it.

Dan is also correct in clearing out the registry, but, and this is just my opinion, thats a bit drastic.

Couldn't you just download 1.6? or no, since its a digital download...?

I learned my lesson on this Digital Download thingy.. when I bought ArmA, worst pay-2-hardrive thing ever. Gotta love steam though :)

see thats the thing i purchased it from gamestop downloads i began the download, finished the download, then went to instal and crashed half way threw so i sent and email to the vendor saying screw it ill go buy a hard copy. so they canceled my order i guess, well the next day installed the hard copy and went to pach and gave me that 1 error message.

ok when i look at that screen there is no update link. and here is the screen shot and yes i love me my heineken lol:yay:





hmmm that didnt work to well. it pretty much says that i cannot use the patch because i have a digitaly distributed version of the game. which makes no sense because i bought a copy of the DVD. erg thanks alot for the help guys i just really want to play with some of my other buddies.

Once you have the game installed, you don't even need the dvd in the drive for mp...

Okay, so you've tried removing all CoD 4 stuff yes? That involves the add/remove programs of both the dled installed version and dvd version (if for some reason it created separate installs); deleting of the CoD4 folders, and the registry?

If you have the hard copy of the game, make sure and uninstall the gamestop dl program also, if cod4 is associated with it. You've already spent the money on the hard copy anyway, so let's pretend the digital install doesn't exist.

Look for anything in the add/remove programs that is CoD4. The company you spoke of is Activision.

ok to the guy above me yea i have done everything you said my good sir. and now i went to download the patch straight from the people i bought the DL version and they say there is no COD4 installed so i go to try again with the patch i downloaded and it gives the same error message. i am seriously wanting to destroy this bloody comp now. all this game has done is create frustration for me. i will not reformat my comp for this game and it is honestly killing me right now lolz.

Be sure the 1.6 patch you are using now is for the bought version and not the DL version.

ok used my lunch break to download this file and still no go. is there anyway to deleate everything on my system except for the OS and my files?
