Crash when joining game & clicking audio options

My game is updated to 1.5 & I have NS installed. I have deleted my cache files, updated my sound and video drivers, installed the windows hotfix, made sure pkbstrA & B are automatic and started, updated 2142 using PBsetup.exe, no internet-dependent programs are running while I launch the game, I am not on Ventrilo or TS, I have cleared my temporary internet files via Control Panel & thru Firefox, I am not running FRAPS, my game CD is in my drive upon launch, & I just installed this game a few days ago.

    The target for my shortcut for 2142 is as follows minus the quotes: "C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Battlefield 2142\BF2142.exe" +playNow 1 +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 2560 +szy 1600 +eaAccountName [myaccountname] +eaAccountPassword [mypassword] +soldierName [mysoldiername]

Problem #1: When the main menu comes up, I go to options, click on audio, & the game crashes to desktop.

Problem #2: Also when I double-click to join any server, it also crashes to desktop.

I always reinstall when I'm having issues like this in any game. That usually fixes most problems.

    Have you tried that yet?

he should edit his sound options manually. they don't exist or are corrupted. search in my documents/profiles/000x/ for audio.con. the file should have data that looks like this(you can copy paste this in your file and then edit it in game):
      AudioSettings.setVoipEnabled 1
      AudioSettings.setVoipPlaybackVolume 1
      AudioSettings.setVoipCaptureVolume 1
      AudioSettings.setVoipCaptureThreshold 0.1
      AudioSettings.setVoipBoostEnabled 1
      AudioSettings.setVoipUsePushToTalk 1
      AudioSettings.setProvider "software"
      AudioSettings.setSoundQuality "High"
      AudioSettings.setEffectsVolume 1
      AudioSettings.setMusicVolume 0.4
      AudioSettings.setHelpVoiceVolume 0.5
      AudioSettings.setEnglishOnlyVoices 0
      AudioSettings.setEnableEAX 1

Tried reinstalling, but same problems still exist.

What is the correct order to install the patches, NS, & update PB?

          Re-install in this order:
          Manual uninstall2142
          Install bf2142
          Patch to 1.4
          Install NS
          Patch to 1.4
Patch to 1.5 with incremental patch.
          Install punkbuster services
          Manually update punkbuster

I actually did exactly that earlier, but still no dice.

This game is absolutely the buggiest train-wreck of a game ever. What, do we have to be computer programmers now to play this abomination? Come on EA/Dice, this is pathetic.

Again, what a joke. No other game I have ever owned requires this much attention just to patch. My game just suddenly started buggin out on the BFHQ screen (yet again), and I had to go through the horror of uninstalling, installing, deleting cache files, patching, uninstalling again because apparently the patch didn't patch correctly, installing, patching, installing NS, repatching, PB install/patch.....WHAT A JOKE!

I recently bought COD4 and installed it, and it was a gigantic wake-up call for as to how piss-poor the Battlefield series is. I'm not talking about gameplay/content, but the install process, log-in/character set-up, patches, and in general how well COD4 runs compared to BF. I will never buy another DICE/EA game ever!

Re: Crash when joining game & clicking audio options

Every time I have reinstalled the game, which was probably at leeast 4 times by now, I have always gotten this same message:
                  "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

                  Buffer overrun detected!

                  Program: ...nic Arts\Battlefield 2142\BF2142VoiceSetup.exe

A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated."

Just in case this meant something.

Just reinstalled again, did the exact and correct order, changed the audio con file, but the same problems still remain. I really don't know whats going on here at all.

I have exactly the same problem, except I don't get that error message when I install. What programs did you remove to fix it? Also, on another topic, what does the +playNow bit do?
