well i used the ak74u for only 2 rounds when i first got it and hated it. but then today i decided to try it again after spectating someone. the 3 maps that i played with it were vacant, downpour, then backlot. after playing through those, i came to the conclusion that "the AK74u FREAKING SUCKS AT LONG RANGE". so i stopped using it. MP5, ive been using this gun since somewhere in the low 40s ranks and it has to be the SMG and probably the 3rd best gun behind 1. AK-47 and 2. M16

Well, that's why you have a deagle. If you choose an SMG you are making a conscious decision to play at a shorter range, so how can you complain about it's lack of range? And the ak74u does have decent range if you know how to use it properly (play with it for more than 3 rounds).

The Ak74u is probably the best SMG at range anyway (except possibly for P90 due to its ridiculous amount of ammo)

It's like a Ak47 on steroids.

I prefer the MP5. More versatile and a bit more range than the AK74u. Although there are a few maps Ill go AK74u on.

AK74U has more range(I think)/damage/wall penetration and looks damn sweet it wins hands down but the mp5 is damn good in some situations

I actually like them both. They are most likely the 2 best SMGs in COD4.
They both work good with any attachment on and from that link in the first post, they both seem to be very much the same in a few areas.

After playing a whole night with both in diff game modes, I prefer the mp5. I got better k/d ratios and while the numbers may say the ak is better on paper, in game, for me anyway, the mp5 did better. The sideways kick can be annoying sometimes, but meh, doesn't bother much.

mp5 silenced sideways recoil motion kills it for me. That and I swear it has the range of a shotgun.
