Best way to set sound...

On my older pc, we had a nice creative labs sound card, but it died a while back. Now, we just got our new pc, and we haven't gotten a sound card for it yet. In the mean time, I'm wondering, when setting the Audio settings in the options section of BF2142, what is the setting to get the best sound? Should I go software or hardware. The only sound is coming from the built in device (Realtek HD Audio output - thats its name), so what works best?

i wouldnt try hardware, it causes problems like hear every sound like its next to you, going from voice comms to plane sounds. Id say try high.

Thanks, cause that explains everything. I had put it on hardware, and I felt like I could hear sounds that were distant like they were next to me, like I had a super sonic ear or something. Really crazy.
