Truly new player seeks help!

Hey everyone,

Well, I think after reading this and a few other forums, I am the last of a dying breed. I am not only new to BF2, I am new to FPS in general! So needless to say, I am not very good right now. Alot of the threads in here are over my head as well. I am happy to see that part of my suckiness might be due to hackers and cheats, at least that's what I tell myself when I come out of a round with a 2:20 ratio. At least I am trying to cap flags! So far I have been focused on infantry only servers as I figure I need to get good at the basics before playing the vehicles too much.

Anyways, my questions are

1) Is there anywhere that has good tips on how to improve? Playing against the computer is very boring and not a challenge compared to real games. I have run through all the different classes in single player to get a feel for what I like and don't like.
2) Are there any newbie friendly servers?
3) How the heck do you get good and chucking gernades!?!? Everytime I throw them it's like a million miles away from people and when they throw at me they always land at my feet :P
4) If friendly fire is off, does that include C4, gernades, vehicles and those sniper trip wire things?
5) I don't have a headset, haven't felt like I needed it yet. I assume this really should be a requirement when playing? The times I joined squads, they didn't seem to do much other than focus where I was attacking.

Watch a lot of BF2 videos, you can find them on youtube etc

Just watch how the good players play and mimic them. If, as you say you've never played FPS' before then your reactions and general coordination won't be as good but you'll improve quickly.

2) Are there any newbie friendly servers?

Not that I know of, however on maps like Karkand there are normally a lot of medics around to revive you and keep you alive. Unfortunately, Karkand doesn't allow you to experience the whole battlefield. IE, no jets/helicopters.

Just make sure you're pointing in the right direction when you let go. They're pretty simple, just line up horizontally with your crosshairs. The only part that requires practise is finding out how far to throw. But again, by watching those videos and practise, you should be able to pick it up.

4) If friendly fire is off, does that include C4, gernades, vehicles and those sniper trip wire things?

Yes, if FF is off then ALL weapons FF will be off.

However, some server admins mix things up a bit and decide to put FF on for guns/grenades but put it OFF for mines/claymores (trip wires )

5) I don't have a headset, haven't felt like I needed it yet. I assume this really should be a requirement when playing? The times I joined squads, they didn't seem to do much other than focus where I was attacking.

Most vBF2 servers I enter nowadays have next to no players using a mic. It's not a requirement, but it does add an extra element to the game if people are using comms.

For BF2, keep playing, and keep learning. People will be still learning to get good at this game for a long time. Focus on ways of staying alive, and the kills will come. Don't worry too much about stats, instead what works and what doesn't. You may consider joining a clan. If you do, you will be around other players that most likely will be happy to show you skills. Most of all, have fun. Depends on what level you aspire to play to, the game should always be fun.

best way to get better is to just play and learn what works for you. learn the maps and prioritize the flags you want / need to take, not all of them are as important as others. example if you play on dragon valley, the most important flag is the refinery so focus your efforts there and avoid the vista point and the temple.

I completely agree with the first response - very nice post. However, on PR - it's a good mod, but it has some die-hard fans all over this site that find it necessary to post it in every thread...

Oh for the love of god, not another thread that turns into PRs awesome/PRs rubbish debate. He's a new player, wanting to learn the basics, so either give him advice or shut up.

night_day, find a server with a low ping for you. Ping can mean the difference between pwning and being pwned. Secondly, find something your good at. Whether it's flying, or medic or sniper or whatever, find a class you like, and practice with it. The killing pretty much comes naturally over time, you train your hands and eyes in tune with the game and your off on a killing spree. If your after points, a 64 man Karkand Infantry Only server as medic, just run around throwing grenades and reviving people.

Here is the best advice anyone on this forum will give you. Take the game back or sell it on ebay to try and get half of what you paid for it. You purchased a game that is no longer supported by the company that produced it with the exception of some unknown contract with GameSpy to provide a master server.

Tell me about it. I've got around 1000 hours of gameplay and my nades don't kill anyone, even when I throw it in a room full of people, yet they always seem to land at my feet, no matter where I am. I swear some nades do 90 degree turns mid air to get me sometimes. Bastard things.

Ignore the hater. There are still loads of peeps playing BF2, and it still remains the most fun game I've ever played, even when you include the poor support from EA.

Bf2 has been around for a while so it's normal to get owned by people who have been playing for 3 years. I used to get owned for ages before I actually managed to start owning. It's a process everyone goes through and you only learn through the ownage of you by other players before you can eventually learn to use their tactics against them.

Well, I've been playing on and off for a looong time, and I still more or less suck. Largely because I can't fly. Oh I try, but I never stay airborne long enough to learn anything....

Anyway, I do remember that I stopped getting the really bad scores (kill little, die lots) when I learned to stay away from artillery. Don't hang around where there are lots of team mates, it's asking for a barrage, especially when you have just capped a flag. Same goes for grenade spam bottlenecks in IO servers.

Join a squad - squad mates in my experience are more likely to go to the trouble of reviving/healing you, and it gives you an option of somewhere else to spawn, either in the battle without a hike to get there, or away from that flag you got killed soon as you spawned last time. That's really the key thing - don't just spawn and hang around picking your nose waiting for the arty/air whores to notch up another kill at your expense.

If you are playing Infantry Only, until you get slick in close combat, either play sniper (go hide and take pot shots, I guarantee you will start getting more kills than deaths even if you have to sit around waiting for a target), or otherwise run around with an assault rifle with grenade launcher (noob tube) ready. If you run into an enemy unexpectedly, point and click and there's a reasonable chance you'll get him, or at least make him cross.

And if you do surprise someone who doesn't see you, don't let rip in a panic (spray and pray), take a beat to aim for his head. That way he won't shoot back.

Lastly, move from cover to cover at a sprint, and pause long enough to get your sprint bar back up to at least 50% before sticking your head out. It's not a lot of fun when a tank comes round the corner and you haven't got the puff to get out of the way.

And have fun. If you get some smug ****hole telling you you suck/are a noob/pulling rank for vehicles etc...there are plenty of other severs to choose from.

The reason their nades always land at your feet is because after a few hours of play you get to know all the choke points off by heart. They just fling them into the choke points knowing they will get a kill.

eg. Karkand, chuck them all into the alyways if your usmc or onto the hill if your mec and you will almost 99% of the time get at least 1 if not 5 kills.
