Re: Error reading from server!
I Emailed EA about this and here is there first response.... just the standard blanket response.
Subject
Error reading from server. I get this message at the end of most rounds. I see that a lot of people are having the same problem but I can not find any information on how to solve this problem. I would like some information please. Is there something I can do to solve this or is it at your end. Thank You, Gavin.

Hello,
Thank you for contacting Electronic Arts. I’am sorry for the difficulty that you are having with the game Battlefield 2.
When troubleshooting online connections, you should keep in mind that you are not only dealing with your home network, but also your Internet Service Provider's series of networks. In addition, be aware that there can be a number of routers that your connection will pass through in order to reach the game server.
Typically, connection issues are caused by one or more ports being blocked by a firewall, router, or your Internet Service Provider in order to help maintain security. However, these ports are the doorways used to send and receive information between your computer and the server. Therefore, you must configure your router/firewall to have the game's ports open in order to connect to the servers properly.
Any Master Server disconnects can be attributed to either a connection issue or a piece of software that communicates over the Internet that will interfere with the transmission of information.
If you are having an Internet connection issue with Battlefield 2, you will need to ensure that you have completed the following steps:
Please download all the appropriate updates and patches for the game and associated software.
Make sure that your computer's drivers are up to date, and any background tasks are closed.
Test to make sure that your Internet connection is not being blocked by a firewall.
Make sure that you eliminate any conflicts with Anti-Virus software that is on your computer.
If you experience lag, clean up and delete any unnecessary files.
Game settings and types of servers can contribute to connection issues and lag.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please download all the appropriate updates and patches for the game and associated software.
Please download and install the latest Battlefield 2 patch which can be found on the Battlefield 2 website under downloads.
There has been an issue with the PunkBuster update tool.
Note: This link will bring you to the PunkBuster website. For any additional information about the PunkBuster files, please contact Evenbalance.
If you are using GameSpy Arcade, please check the requirements listed in the em>Working Around the Firewall/Proxy section of their site. Note: This link will bring you to the GameSpy Arcade website. For any information on the GameSpy Arcade files, please contact GameSpy.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Make sure that your computer's drivers are up to date, and any background tasks are closed.
Any VPN (Virtual Private Network) software will interefere with the communication between the client software and the Master Server. Please ensure that any VPN software is closed or disabled before playing Battlefield 2.
Anti-virus or Internet security software can also slow down your signal. These programs check every packet that goes in or out of the system. Make sure that all non-essential programs are turned off before starting the game.
In addition to freeing up system resources by closing any non-essential background tasks, you need to make sure all of the drivers are up to date.
If the drivers are up to date, your system more likely to be at peak performance when playing the game.
Another issue is the speed with which your system processes data and sends it back again. If your system meets the minimum requirements for the single-player game, make sure the system also meets the requirements for playing on the Internet. These extra requirements can include:
Proper connection speed
Higher memory requirements
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Test to make sure that your Internet connection is not being blocked by a firewall.
To locate packet loss, which can be caused by a firewall or other software, you can run a trace route program to see if there are any major losses on the way to the servers. We use UOTrace, a trace program that was originally made for one of our games, but it can also be used for any online trace. Run Uotrace to determine routing factors.
If any of the information is being blocked, or there is a percentage of packet loss, there is a hardware or software firewall that is interrupting the signal. Please make certain that the following ports are opened on all firewalls:
The ports for Battlefield 2 are as follows:
UDP ports:
27900
29900
29910
27901
55123
55124
55215
16567
1500-4999
18060
TCP ports:
80
29900
29901
29920
28910
4711
18060
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Make sure that you eliminate any conflicts with Anti-Virus software that is on your computer.
Anti-virus software can cause conflicts with the game; it is recommended that you disable or configure your anti-virus software to minimize such conflicts. Anti-virus software can also cause errors when your games try to open files or establish connections because of the active scan and similar settings. EA Download Manager, EA downloader, PunkBuster, etc are all programs sensitive to active scan and anti-virus filtering.
To resolve this issue, set up your anti-virus Exclusion list to not scan your BF2 folder and BF2 profile, located by default in the following folders:
C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\
C: \Document and Settings\MyProfile\Battlefield 2
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you experience lag, clean up and delete any unnecessary files.
Make sure that your disk drives have been defragmented. Windows has a default disk defragmenting tool that you can use by following the steps below:
Click on the Start button.
Click on All Programs or Programs.
Next, click on Accessories.
Then, click on System Tools.
Click on Disk Defragmenter.
This will run the Disk Defragmenter on your hard drive to make sure that all of your files are efficiently organized.
Next, delete your cache file for Battlefield 2. To do this:
Double-click on My Documents.
Double-click on the Battlefield 2 folder.
Double-click on the mods folder.
Double-click on the Bf2 folder.
Double-click on the cache folder.
Click and highlight all the folders in this directory.
Press the Delete key to delete these files and folders.
Try the game again.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game settings and types of servers can contribute to connection issues and lag.
See if you are experiencing the same issues on a particular server type. The type of server appears to the left of the multiplayer server-selection portal.
The server type icons can be found here.
The larger the map, the more information that will need to be transmitted. You may not have a connection that can handle large player maps; you may want to try servers with smaller maps. Even if you have the bandwidth and hardware to handle the large maps, remember that the particular server you are attempting to join may NOT have the best connection for you. In this case as well, try another server.
VoIP (Voice Over IP) enabled servers also means more data transmission. Try non-VoIP servers.
Ingame details and options can impact packet size and speed. The more details you are using in your settings, the more information the game has to process. If you have any filters for text, these can also slow down the game. Try lowering options to speed up game play. Here is a small example list of things that could slow down online games.
Translation filters for incoming text.
Error logging
Obscenity filters
High end lighting effects
High graphic details
In-game viewing distance.

Thank You for your quick response. I play bf2 on public servers as well as in a organized group(21 Century Warfare). I have updated drivers and all ports are open. I do not run anti-virus programs when gaming, nor do I have anything running in the background that is not absolutely essential. I update PB regularly. No matter where I am playing, it is a crap shoot to see who is going to disconnect at the end of a round. At 21CW we play on our own server that is normally full and at the end of a round at least 5 people out of the 60 and as many as 20 disconnect at the end of every round. I believe this is at your end and I am wondering if there is anything being done about it? Thank you again

Hello,
Thank you for writing us back and I’m sorry to hear that you're still having difficulty playing online. To narrow down the cause of the issue, can you please try directly connecting your PC to the modem (if you're using a router). By doing this, we can determine if the issue is being caused by the router itself. Now if your DSL or Cable modem connects directly to your PC already, try power cycling the modem itself. This means unplugging the modem from the wall, waiting one or more minutes and then plugging it back in. Restart the system and try again.
If the issue persists, there is a tool we use with one of our other online games (Ultima Online) called UOTrace, which allows you to test your connection quite easily. If you have a computer that is connected to the internet, we recommend using this utility to help resolve connection issues.

Re: Error reading from server!
You have fun emailing EA?
Just for reference,
http://forums.ea.com/mboards/thread....62632&tstart=0
it is an EA/Gamespy issue with the account server. Violet finally came out of her cave long enough (page 8) to admit there is a problem. Too bad she didn't say anything about when it might be fixed.Comment

Re: Error reading from server!
Yeah i read that thread once.... a week ago. Thanks for the info but whats up with the sarcasm. Why is it that people feel the need to try and put others down for no reason. Or is this a sad attempt at humor?
When I originally read the post they had not admitted to the problem. I don't go there and read it everyday in hopes someone will say something useful. However I do put effort into finding out what is wrong and I take the time to share it with others, in a way that I feel is useful.

Re: Error reading from server!
Has anyone else noticed in the past few days no "error reading from EA master server" errors? I think after a month EA has fixed the issue. I was getting disconnected after every round.Comment
