Vista home ultimate 64 and 2142/Bf2

I bought a new laptop with 4 gigs of ram, 512 mb ati hd radeon graphics... yet when i try to play 2142 or Bf2 I can't. With 2142...the game loads, the crashes and I get an error that says:

"bf2142.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close"

If i click the info at the bottom of the send problem box, it says something about dx9.dll or something. Natively, dx10 came installed on this laptop.

Battlefield 2 just ctd's after the splashscreen loads.

I am not sure what to do. Before you flamers flame me, I have searched far and wide on the net, and extensively on these forums with no luck. I have found threads of a similar nature, but none with fixes that help me.

Things I have tried:

Removing both bf2 and 2142 from windows firewall and readding..
Downloading and installing dx9.0c (not sure if possible coupled with dx10?)
A different 2142 .exe
disabling UAC
Running in Administrator mode
Trying to set the default video.con to 59hz (this lappys widescreen refresh)@800x600, but my desktop is 1680X1050@59hz...?
The widescreen fixes for both.

Help me please! Other games like Call of Duty 4 and Rainbow 6 Vegas 1 and 2 run flawlessly!

I installed Vista home ultimate 32 last week and installed 2142 today and am having the same problem.All other games I have run fine.I installed dx9c and didnt fix a thing.
The game loads to the sceen where you see the walker then crashs with a screen saying window is trying to fix.

I have not installed BF2 yet but would like to.

Maybe the new patch will fix the problem .

did you try to reinstall. update video drivers, update windows.

You could email ea, its a pain but they will try and help. take some SS of the error, give them all your system spec. This will save you a step.

I run 2142 fine on vista but some people like yourself are having problems.
Maybe their will be something in the patch for vista.

When you get the error box, there is a little link for SHOW DETAILS. It appears to be the directx9.dll that is causing the problem. CAN you have dx9 AND dx10 both installed without conflict on vista home ultimate 64?

I found the problem for me.It was a bad patch.Make sure you use the patch that says

BF2142_Update_1.40_FP which I got from fileplanet.I now remember having the same problem with xp.
