Screen Resolution

I'm running a resolution of 1680 x 1050 and whenever I've played Battlefield 2 before, it always just stretched to fit my screen even if I had the video settings to 800 x 600. I haven't played for a long time and just bought the entire package, Battlefield 2, Special Forces with Armored Fury and Euro Force and this time around, if I don't edit the shortcut icon with +szx 1680 +szy 1050, my screen will be full rather than wide or stretched and there will be just black on the sides and the video in the middle. +szx 1680 +szy 1050 helps, but it really slows my PC down just like any game does when I use that resolution.

Any ideas?

Is this on a desktop LCD or a laptop? Is it the same system you used before? Are you using the same BF2 account you used with the old install of BF2? What resolution is set in the video.con file(s) under My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles?

Different laptops or video cards have different behavior for running at resolutions below the native res of the LCD panel. Some always stretch, some stretch only at certain resolutions, and some make it user-selectable through a hotkey, BIOS setting, or possibly through the video driver.

I'm using a desktop LCD (Samsung 205BW). Exact same system I've used before, but I bought the game collection via EA and installed with EA Downloader and created a new account. Bought it all over again because I lost the game discs along with the cd-key I bought way back in early '06. Probably lost it in the midst of moving last year. The resolution under Video.con is 800x600@60Hz, but it doesn't matter what I have it set to it still displays the same.

Before I played the game, I installed the drivers for the monitor and I usually don't, I usually just use the video card drivers and everything is fine. I think that may have something to do with it.

Googling that montior and "stretch" I've seen some reviews say it always stretches 4:3 images but not wide images and one that says it's a monitor setting. Try browsing through the on-screen display for the monitor and see if there's any references to 'aspect ratio' or 'stretching' or similar.

I've also read that nVidia drivers will let you change this but ATI would not. (i.e. the driver can be set to add the black space around the image and then send a full-screen image to the monitor so that the monitor doesn't need to stretch it.)

sounds like your video card might not be strong enough to support that resolution. when your stretching 800x, your video card is rendering at 800x and the monitor is just stretching that image. now your trying to render 1680x which is double the original resolution and your getting lag due to bad/low frame rates.

what are your computer specs?
you could always try running everything at low settings and 100% view distance.
