    Future Gaming...

I've had this on my mind for a few days, so I figured I'd post and see what you guys thought.

Basically, the direction of video games seems to be heading more and more towards graphics/realism and less towards gameplay, primarily in the FPS department. Take a look at the CS series, they have arguably the best infantry/objective game play to date, yet don't have the latest and greatest graphics or realism. You could have crosshairs almost the size of a single pixel, frag grenades were weak, etc.

Complete mastery of weapons was possible, and with enough skill allowed a player to switch between weapons at certain points to minimize reload times, along with the ability to fire an extremely accurate first shot due to the weapon handling. While it may not have been "realistic" to be able to place your shot within a single pixel every time you shot, it helped improve overall gameplay. Yes, it was "cheap" for experienced players to have such an ability, but it took time and practice - and rewarded those who gave it the required effort.

Now, while all games may not strive for complete realism (not talking about ArmA/Flashpoint realism), many are incorporating just enough to decrease the amount of talent/skill possible in that game. Unlike CS:S/CS 1.6, newer games (BF2, 2142, CoD4, etc.) have implemented certain aspects of how weapons handle in the real world, resulting in a decrease of potential "skill" with that weapon. Example: CS you could no scope across the map with practice, CoD4, you can stand infront of a door and still miss with an unzoomed sniper rifle.

The argument for the increase in realism consists mainly of: "Well, it's cheap for good players to have such an ability." That's what makes the game fun! Not everybody can jump in and do well, and that's what has helped make the game last.

I'm not saying that games should just drop realism, but what I'm trying to get across is the fact that we need more games that give us the gameplay that CS once did. You may as well just say, "well, then go back to CS!" but the fact is, new teams and players want to have the opportunity to be the next generation of skilled gamers... with new games.

Do you guys see the same thing with games?

I cant say that CoD4, BF2 etc are more realistic than CS... They are more "photo-realistic", but thats about it

Well, they aren't "realistic" per say, but they aren't "not-realistic" to the point of placing a shot within a single pixel every time.

I say Battlefield: Heroes kicks this trend, and hopefully well!

I stopped taking you seriously after you said that bit about CS being the best infantry game to date.

You say realism ruins the gameplay, but i personally see it as enhancing it. I have only once played CS and really didnt like it because it was so unrealistic. Realism and fun can go hand in hand.

Sorry if I clipped out bits of your statement. Some of it didn't make sense to me.

Realism can only go as far as reality allows it - meaning that once graphics and game-play becomes so lifelike that it becomes redundant, people will start to look for alternatives in the surreal or arcade again.

There are web, game and software designers out there who estimate that with the current strides and advances in computing equipment that console gaming will hit full blown "Realism" by the ninth generation sometime around the years 2015-2018. Online game-play will then become the main medium.

Personal Computer games will reach "Realism" at least a few years before that, but the next generation of consoles will be realism's pinnacle. After that, it's downhill until full-blown Virtual Reality becomes feasible.

I agree with him. There is a possible future for First Person Shooter Games, where players will be ranked appropriately by game statistics and pitted against players who are of the same proposed skill level.

Naturally this system will be exploitable as are all systems - but for the most part, it could appease all crowds. Of course Electronic Arts still has yet to even release the information on this proposed system, so thus far it's nothing more than a blissful rumor for those of us grasping onto straws for hope.

Games are games. Play what you find fun.

I wish gaming went back to what it was 1997-2001/4 or so.
Gory-*** arena shooters, tactical shooters, etc, that weren`t niche that they are now.

The faster the moment when we can`t differ between a photo and a screenshot comes, the better. Maybe then, gameplay will be the #1 priority. Not that atm all games now suck bawls when it comes to gameplay, but they tend to.

Personally, I don`t want gaming to go the BF2 way and mix infantry with vehicles. More games like BF2 is just fine, but not all, not even the majority.

My assumption is that the year 2018 onward will be the golden age of video games, because the advances made in disc size will be used to better the game-play, game-size and Software Development Kits of the games rather than just the graphics.

But yet, we will still see the closure or buy out of pretty much any relatively small game developer. By 2020 i bet we are left with a handful of large monopolies such as EA, THQ, Konami etc...

I said it was arguably the best FPS to date... meaning you don't have to agree, but many do.
Plus, I see your type of replies quite often... and they are quite... pointless?

Anyways, thanks for the replies Dairuka/Alex. That date does seem pretty realistic in terms of the advancement of technology, but I hope that rather than continuing to strive to the point of virtual-reality, companies begin to focus on innovative gameplay.

There is no denying that Counter Strike is one of the most played, and most known about games. Whether it is the best to date is down to opinion, but there is no playing down the hype around the CS franchise.

                              Except it essentially is.

You grow up playing tag and kiss-chase and you carry on doing it. One or even both inevitably becomes computerised.
