Strange lag, and low FPS randomly

    Hey guys,

Well I got my rig upgrade, you can see my specs on my profile thing.

Anyway sometimes, when I double click the COD4 icon and start the game, when I get into the menu, sometimes it lags and the mouse jerks around. And sometimes it runs smooth. When it runs smooth I get good FPS and no lag on a s erver. but when it doesn't go smooth at first I get sooo choppy and 5 FPS.

Why? My antivirus is not running. Only xfire is running. Anybody else have this problem? Please help!"I want to know how to make it smooth like it is sometimes.

I have a friend that swore is AV was not running. He disabled it. The icon was in the corner with a little red X on it, showing it was disabled. That improved the game, but when an airstrike came in, he would get lag still. It drove him crazy. Finally, I told him to shut it down entirely when in the game.

He did and the lag went away. Is yours shut down entirely?

If it is. Try a checkdisk and defrag on your hard drives and see if that helps it. Its strange that you are getting the lag while your loading up the game and not while IN the game. That hints of some other issue in the PC somewhere.

OK, so I defragged. And I'm using the free AVG thing, so I right click the icon in the lower right corner "Toolbar" and say "Quit" and it goes away.

      I'll try again...

EDIT: BTW how do I do a check disk?

Open "My Computer" and RIGHT click on your hard drive(s) and go to PROPERTIES. Click on TOOLS on the window that opens and click CHECK NOW in the Error Checking option. Check both boxes and click START.

Before doing that though, back up your CoD profile and it may take a very long time. You will need to reboot your PC.

OK I did that. And I get the same thing.

When I start the game, the menu lags for a few seconds, then it works. But ingame it lags and I get 20ish FPS.

When I start the game, and the menu doesn't lag at first. It works fine, I get 40-50ish FPS and no lag (Full high settings)

Doesn't anybody know what my problem may be?

You're going to have to turn things off one at a time and see what stops it. Try turning off Xfire, it always gave me issues.

Another thing I recall is if you use Realtek audio, there was a problem with drivers and they had to be updated to correct some problems. You might check that. You might have some other outdated driver causing it.

Maybe someone else had the issue and will post.

Well, update your graphics card drivers for one... nvidia.com for an nvidia card. Not sure about ATI. Check that you aren't running unnecessary processes in the background as well.
