Spectate not respawn - PC version

In searching for details on entering Spectate mode, I found this thread that seemed relevant, which led me to believe that when a round begins there should be a "choose team" option alongside Spetsnaz/SAS that says "Spectate". In the servers I've played on I've yet to see that option. Is it a server-side option to disable intentional Spectate?

If so, question two is, on servers that allow intentional Spectate, is there a way I can choose NOT to respawn after being killed, but instead continue spectating on, say, a buddy who wants to show me something (yep, I'm a newb who's only @ lvl 19)?

while in the limbo menu, press Esc, that`ll kick you to spectator mode.

Haha, lead calling it the limbo menu... thats confusing for those of us who never played Wolfenstein...

He means the main menu... but the one while your in-game.

Thanks guys. So it would go like this:
1) Jump out from cover when the big shiny whirlybird goes overhead, spraying my pistol at it
2) Die
3) While I'm watching the Kill-Cam or spectating on a teammate (depending on server setting), watching the 10-second timer click down, press ESC
4) Stay in spectate mode, switching between teammates using the mouse buttons
5) Press ESC again to respawn and find the whirlybird again?

Is that right?

You need to go into spectate mode BEFORE respawning.

Also, most servers have it set to force respawn, or the spectate mode is set to not show you whats going on. So if it doesnt work in one server, try another for it might be the settings of that server.

If you want to try it, the servers in my sig allow team spectating only.

You need to go into spectate mode BEFORE respawning.

You can still go spectator once you've joined a team, Escape -> Change Team -> Spectator. You can do it when you're alive too, you'll just die.

to clear it all up:

1. JOIN A SERVER. THEN:

A) Before picking a team and playing, hit escape and you will be in spectator mode
B) If you already picked a team - you MUST hit escape > change team > spectator buttons in order to become spectator. Simply hitting escape does not work like in "A"


Additionally: There are three options on a server for spectating. One allows freecam and player following. The next is player following only. The last is no free-cam or player following - your camera is only in one spot and you can't move it or follow players. It all depends on the server setting.
