The system i have is p4 3.2 , 1 GB ddr 400mhz , 6600GT 128mb AGP, windows xp, 17" monitor

So as you can see im taking a big leap forward with my new system.

Core2duo 2.12
2GB ddr2 800mhz
8600GTS 512MB PCIe
Windows Vista
19" Monitor

The big question is what kinda performence will i get on all the battlefields?

Im guessing it can hold its own against modern games but the older games like bf2 etc, well...sumbody enlighten me.

Well for bf2 i would say that would be going somewhere near all high maybe a few meds for really high FPS. 2142 is about the same i would say.

Yep, the only thing that will be holding you back is the 8600GT. I think you will run mostly high.

I really wonder wtf you guys are smoking. I play BF2 on all high and get around 50 FPS. My specs are: 3 GHZ CPU (2CPU's), 2 gig RAM and a nice and old GeForce 6800. So please dont tell ppl that you need a NASA computer to play a 3 yearls old game

Big deal? You fail to mention

1). What model of 6800 you have, there is a huge difference between a bog standard 6800 and a 6800GS or GT.
2). What res you play at, 50FPS is no biggy if you're running at 800x600
3). Weather you force AA or AT.

Yeah, I would have thought my rig would have rocked the hell outta bf2 considering my current rig is

And corkum, The graphix card is the bit i spent the most money on so it should be able to handle BF at least

And as i side note, Waaah_wah , i dont even get 50 fps with my 6600gt card and thats on 800x600 lol

No AA enabled. If i have 4x AA i get 30-40 fps in vBf2 but PR gets a bit laggy so i dont have it enabled

If you have a 6800 standard then you have a card that is woefully incapable of playing BF2 at any frame rate let alone a standard 50FPS. With any of the 6800 series of cards I doubt you could maintain a standard 50FPS frame rate. The 6600GT pulls about 31FPS on Battlefield 2142 which is basically the same game engine as BF2. That's at a lower res than what you say you play at with no AA and all settings at high.

I would love to see a picture of BF2 running at 50FPS on that card at that res, not because I don't believe you but rather because everything suggests it can't be done. I used to play Oblivion on a 6800GS with everything on at a good FPS with a decent res, everything said I shouldn't be able to but I could so I was always happy to provide proof.

An old but brand new 640MB version of the 8800GTS would be about £30 more than a 8600GT (depending on which versions of each you get and judging by Overclockers prices) the benefit being that it would take that 8600GT outside and give it a total hiding. If you wanted even cheaper you could get a 320MB GTS for £88 and that would give the 8600GT a twice over kicking in just about any game you care to mention.

If you want specifics though you're looking about x2 times the FPS across the board.

Crap, ive already got the system sorted, im just waiting to get it deliverd lol, in all honesty im not bothered about all the bells and whistles, i just want decent quality with good fps on all my games as my current card could'nt hold up half-life 1 without moaning(bit ova the top but you get my point) lol

as long as i get fast fps on mediem quality at say..1200x1000 or wateva it is ill be a happy chappy!

Also everyone sez 8600gt when its a 8600GTS I have, this happens on all fourmes, everyone seems to forget the S making my card crapper than it is cuz i no the gts is better than a gt

Wait wait wait... back up. Why the card-bashing?

I've been running BF2 on 2 computers. Both had ati 9600's and ran at ~30fps low settings.

A couple years ago I bought a 6600GT. Before it died it played BF2 at full specs, 4x AA, 800X600 and got at least 30 fps (I never measured it but it always ran smooth as silk).

And you're trying to say this card sucks for BF2? Please! If it didn't die I'd be using it now; it's as good as my 7600GT.

So to the OP: That system will crush BF2. Any new system will. I set my brother up with something similar and it runs BF2 without even trying.

Oh by the way... How much do you want for your old 6600GT?

huh, I play BF2 on medium settings at a res of 1152 x whatever and it runs with like 60-70fps on my GeForce 6600 (256MB though)
I have 2 gigs of ram and a Pentium D925 3.0 GHz

This system still works quite good with BF2 and regarding BF2 there's no reason to change/upgrade it.

@Pyro: a bit more RAM and a new video card should have been enough

Well if you've played BF2 with 100 FPS you don't want to go back. I had a 7500 LE card before and while I could play everything on all high with around 30 FPS on a low resolution my current card (8800GTS) just beats the crap out of it.

For BF2 pretty much any 8800 series card can play it on highest settings, although the 8400 might struggle a little.

It is not the video card holding him back!!! It is Windows VISTA (period). All 3d Mark tests show that VISTA drops up 20-30fps off all the major games, even those that are 3 years old.

VISTA is a memory hungry operating system that uses more RAM than WinXP, so therefore 2GB does not pull its weight in a VISTA machine as 2GB would under XP.

Recommend upgrading to 4GB of RAM and keeping your 8600GTS, which is only a small step down from the 8800GTX, and not worth your money to upgrade for the little performance gain you would get from installing it!!!!!!! (forget about the 9000 series cards too....they are CRAP)

Buy more RAM, you wont be sorry!!!
