From what others have said, this happens when you shoot down a gunship, the pilot or gunner bails just before it explodes, and then is killed by the explosion. Thus crediting you with a road kill. The same applies on the ground when you are shooting a vehicle, someone bails before it explodes but the explosion kills them.
The other possibility which I've done a couple of times is motion-mine a place, forget about it and later find yourself in a titan AA turret when one of those motion mines nails someone.
I think you get a roadkill for that, even though you're on AA duty....
